HONDA AT THE 2007 KIEV AUTOMOTIVE SHOW

Honda is making its first official public debut in Ukraine by participating at the 2007 Kiev Automotive Show which runs from May 18th-22nd, 2007. On show is Honda's sporty and advanced car range with particular highlights being the newly introduced Civic, CR-V and Legend. Also, the world's most advanced humanoid robot, ASIMO, as well as the latest Honda contender in the pinnacle of motor sport - Formula 1 - the Honda RA107 with its unique picture of the world livery.

The Civic, CR-V, Legend, Accord and the Honda S2000, are all shining examples for the emphasis that Honda puts on the styling of vehicles. The customer benefits are unique models with strong character and also sleek and aerodynamic shapes for low wind noise and good high-speed fuel economy.

Also, viewed from an environmental perspective, these models mark the top in each of their segments. The engines are some of the most modern that are available in the market. Fuel economy, and thus exhaust emission, is amongst the best in each class. Showcasing this environmental perspective is the Civic Hybrid, one of Honda's answers to a low emission emitting model. For the show, the Civic Hybrid is shown in its "myearthdream" livery to match the F1 car. At the same time, they deliver performance that make the vehicles fun to drive and give them, together with very advanced chassis technology, the sporty feel that Honda cars are famous for.

The advanced chassis technologies, besides giving the sporty handling, also help the active safety of Honda vehicles. These are combined with an array of electronic features that help to prevent accidents as much as possible. For passive safety, Honda has a history of developing very safe body structures. With the introduction of the new Civic about a year ago, Honda started to implement with each new model the so-called ACE Body Structure - a technology that gives best possible protection to occupants and pedestrians in case of a crash under real world conditions by optimizing the energy absorption.

ASIMO
The development of a robot that can move like, interact with and be of assistance to humans is recognised as one of the great technological challenges of the 21st Century. At the forefront of attempts to scale this "scientific Everest" is ASIMO - Honda's latest generation of humanoid robots.

Honda's long-term commitment to the development of humanoid robots stretches back two decades and was originated by the desire of its engineers to take on a unique technological challenge in the field of mobility.

The company developed its first robot to walk on two legs in 1986. The ground-breaking programme that followed has been inspired by Honda's commitment to innovation and the development of advanced products that will deliver real benefits to people now and in the future, fulfilling at the same time one of its fundamental objectives which is "making Honda a company that society wants to exist.".

Honda RA107
On public display will be the Honda Racing F1 Team's brand new race car, the RA107.
The all-new RA107 is this year's Honda contender in the Formula 1 world championship. Noticeable at first sight is the fact that there are no sponsor logos on the car - merely a picture of mother earth. The whole idea behind this bold approach is to raise awareness globally about the impact that mankind is having on the world's environment. A new website was created www.myearthdream.com where users can make a pledge towards doing their bit for the environment as well as have the possibility of including their name on the car in the form of making up one of the pixels of the picture of mother earth that covers the car. The driver line-up remains unchanged with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

Honda Ukraine LLC
Honda Ukraine LLC (HUA) was established on May 3rd, 2006. Now with over 40 people, Honda's latest venture into Europe's most prominent emerging market promises to be fruitful. Honda has been marketing automobiles in Ukraine through a distributor since 1992. HUA aims to enhance Honda's sales capacity in the country by establishing a sales network which can handle the future expansion of the market. Honda's Ukrainian automobile sales increased by 30% to 2,200 units in 2005 and the company plans sales of about 5,500 units during 2007, an increase of 150% on 2005.

Overall Concept
Globally, Civic is Honda's best selling model and over 16 million units of this automotive icon have been produced and sold around the world during the past 35 years - 30% of total Honda sales over that period. Civic has frequently served as the vehicle for latest Honda technology and the eighth generation is no exception. Currently, the Civic range is produced in 11 countries and sold in approximately 160 world markets.

Honda's customer research revealed that while customers of the previous Civic found the car useful in everyday life, they would also appreciate a more compact and sportier body to match the handling that has also been one of the main attributes of Honda's C segment car in Europe.

Honda therefore worked to blend the good handling and performance exhibited by the previous generation with spacious interiors and almost seamless functionality. The result is a new range of C-segment contenders with compact external dimensions and a large, spacious cabin for comfortable, economical motoring.

As Honda anticipated, the Civic is proving popular with customers in their mid 30s and early 40s, mainly male, single or double income with no kids, or young families with a yearly income above 40,000 Euros. New Civic drivers enjoy expressing a special status, have a strong interest in career development, love new technology, and recognise value in functionality that can benefit their personal lives. They demonstrate social responsibility without giving up the pursuit of their own enjoyment.

The Honda Civic has always been a car to lead in new directions, to create new standards and more value for the customer. At a time when cars are growing increasingly similar, with the 8th generation Civic Honda has introduced a new approach to the C segment car. The result is that Honda's Civic range is one of the most diverse in the European C-segment offering 3, 4 and 5-door bodystyles and a variety of drivetrains including the unique IMA hybrid system (not available in all markets).


Exterior design: 5-door hatchback
Although the Civic's external dimensions are smaller and lower than its predecessor - overall length is 4,248 mm and height 1,460 mm, both down by over 30 mm - the interior dimensions do not suffer at all. Honda has increased the overall width by 50 mm, to 1,765 mm, and the front and rear tracks to 1,504 mm (up 36 mm) and 1,510 mm (up 41 mm), respectively, to create a more dynamic silhouette and a better handling car.

The new Civic has undeniable presence. Possessing 5-door functionality with coupe overtones, its wedge shape and 'cab forward' look suggest strong dynamic performance. Distinctive features abound including its unique 'face' with the headlamps blending seamlessly with a central glazed panel; triangular front fog lamps (on all models except Comfort), a design motif that is repeated by the integrated exhaust tailpipes positioned at either side of the rear bumper; 'concealed' rear door handles, that add to the sense of coupe styling; and tailgate glass that is split horizontally by a rear spoiler.

Individuality was always a key requirement in the project. In the words of Toshiyuki Okumoto, Project Leader for Exterior Design of the new Civic, "The aim was to create a product with Japanese DNA but able to survive in the competitive European market. I spent time in Milan to get some inspiration for my first sketches. It became clear to me that Europeans are very proud of their culture, so I thought I should adopt that same attitude and design a car that is proud of Japanese culture."

Crucial to the development of this revolutionary design was the Japanese Kimono. The human body can be seen as the frame of the car and the clothes are the exterior design. Having this in mind, European clothes are tightly fit to the body, tending to show the body shape. A Japanese Kimono wraps itself around the body in a plain manner but with sharp lines. Thus, the combination of sensual movement (a European quality) and unpretentious sharp-edge design (a Japanese quality) were incorporated as much as possible into the design of the new Civic.


Exterior design: Type R
The silhouette of the Type R is similar to that of the 5-door's. Its individual personality has been realised not by a radical change of line, but rather is characterised by a series of unique details. A more sharply tapering rear side window emphasises the coupé rear end, and bold side skirts, the noticeably widened track and the large-dimensioned wheels (18-inch) considerably heighten the dynamic look of this sports car. In addition, the Type R's special character is highlighted by well drawn-down body-coloured front and rear skirts, a rear spoiler plus a radiator grille with enlarged air intake. Type R logos on the front brake callipers enhance the overall sporting picture.


Exterior design: 4-door sedan
Although built on Honda's Global Compact Platform, the Civic 4-door sedan features its own unique design. In comparison with the Civic 5-door range, it is almost 300 mm longer overall and with a 2700 mm, rather than 2635 mm wheelbase; is also slightly lower. Its design is characterised by a ‘cab forward' theme, with a wedge-shaped body, sharply raked windscreen and short overhangs front and rear


Interior Design
The Civic redefines interior packaging standards and, by combining futuristic design with versatility, practicality and utility are raised to a new level.

The high-tech and sporty cockpit is characterised by the very distinctive Dual Link fascia in which the most essential information is placed at the very top of the display and relatively far forward. This requires the driver to make only minimal eye movements between the road and the display and therefore minimises distraction. Secondary information is spaced around this central focus.

The three-dimensional effect Multiplex instrument panel features a central speedometer, the rev indicator to its left (based on the torque peak) and an Eco indicator to the right (showing the instant fuel economy). Beneath this are the multi-information display with odometer, trip (twin trip), outside temperature, drive computer (instant fuel consumption, available cruising range, average vehicle speed, average fuel economy, elapsed time) and an enlarged warning light area.

Compared with the previous generation Civic, the steering wheel is set at a more upright and ergonomically advantageous angle. Both driver and front-seat passenger profit from extra legroom and greater freedom of movement in general on the front seats. The steering wheel is adjustable for height and reach. On the top left hand side are the audio remote control switches and on the opposite side the cruise control buttons. On the bottom left are the navigation system recognition controls and on the opposite side the multi-info display switches. Illumination allows easy recognition at night.

Soft touch materials are used for the upper sections of the dashboard and the door panels, while the lower section of the dashboard, the centre console and the lower part of the door panels are covered with a leather-effect grain.

Highlighting its sporty nature, the interior of the Civic Type R is characterised by elements from motor racing and from high-quality sports cars. Large black Alcantara bolsters with red stitching provide the driver and front seat passenger with both good side grip and an ergonomically perfect sitting position. With their red fabric, the seat cushions, backs and rear seats offer a visual contrast.

The dials in the fascia are also red illuminated and set off by brushed metal switch panels. The steering wheel is covered in perforated leather with red stitching. The gear-shift knob, machined from aluminium, projects stylishly from a black leather boot - also with red stitching. An added touch of exclusivity is provided by a plaque engraved with a serial number unique to each Civic Type R.


Packaging - ‘Hidden Versatility'
Despite its more compact external dimensions, the Civic still offers a distinct advance in interior packaging over its predecessor. The tandem distance (measured from the hip point of the front seat passenger to that of the rear seat passenger and a key indicator of in-car roominess) for example, is 803mm, a figure on a par with some larger D-segment contenders (810 mm for 4-door models).

A key element in this packaging efficiency for the hatchback models is the unique fuel tank located centrally under the front seats enabling a low rear floor to be achieved. The rear seats also have a one-motion, dive-down feature that instantaneously creates a flat loading space. Equally they can be returned to their original position with little effort. With the rear seats folded down, the luggage compartment offers so much space that three mountain bikes (with their front wheels removed) can be accommodated. The stowage capacity behind the front seats amounts to 1,352 litres. The cargo floor can also be dropped down to reveal a secondary 70 litre under-floor storage compartment. When the front passenger seat is fully reclined, objects with a total length of up to 2.6 metres can be accommodated.

Further exceptional utility is provided on 5-door models by rear seat bases that can be tipped up to form a second storage area in the rear passenger cabin.

For all body styles, numerous storage areas and compartments enable accessories and oddments of various sizes to be accommodated. The illuminated glovebox has a capacity of 14 litres and contains a separate map pocket inside the damped lid. If required, the glove box can be provided with cold air from the air-conditioning unit, to keep snacks and drinks cool underway. The front door pockets (and those in the rear on 4 and 5-door models) are equipped to hold 500 ml bottles and maps.

The centre pocket is intended for smaller items such as a mobile phone, while there's a double cup holder stored behind the cigarette lighter and ashtray. The centre console box is able to accommodate all sorts of small items, or a music library of up to 22 CDs.


Powertrains: Civic 5-door hatchback / Civic 4-door sedan
Both the Civic 5-door and 4-door are powered by a 1799 cc 103 kW/140 PS petrol unit.

It is combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox which offers improved shift feel thanks to a shorter synchromesh sleeve stroke, a linkless rotation select structure, and high capacity detent bearings that generate less friction.

For the 5-door, this manual transmission also forms the basis for the brand-new automated manual transmission gearbox - the first to feature in a Honda. Named the "i-SHIFT", the system adopts a clutch and change actuator to ensure better fuel economy, and of course the driver has a choice of Auto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or Manual Mode which offers sportier gear shifting using the steering wheel paddle shifts.

For the 4-door, the engine can be mated to an automatic transmission which features an extra ‘S' mode for more sporty gear selections, changing up at higher engine speeds in each ratio. On the 1.8 ES model, the driver can also switch to manual changes - S-Matic - by operating the steering-wheel mounted paddles while ‘S' is selected.

The engine provides levels of driveability, fuel efficiency, emissions and performance that confirm Honda's outstanding reputation for advanced engine technology and its position as the world's largest engine manufacturer.

The main priorities behind the 1.8-litre engine's development were to create a power unit that would perform remarkably well at mid and low revs, and with astonishing responsiveness. On the other hand, it had to be a quiet engine with a refined feel to the sound quality, essential in a car that will compete in the premium C segment. It also had to fit within the limited space under the hood without interfering with either the overall design or handling characteristics. Last but certainly not least, it had to focus on good fuel economy and low emissions. And that was where the state-of-the-art VTEC technology was instrumental in meeting these objectives.

Among the rev-happy 1.8-litre engine's technical highlights are comprehensive friction-reduction measures and an innovative intake valve timing arrangement. Conventionally, during cruising and low load conditions, partial closure of the throttle valve causes pumping losses. In this latest engine, however, closure of the intake valves is retarded and the throttle valve is opened wide to reduce those pumping losses. An open throttle valve would normally cause fierce acceleration, but the delayed intake valve closure allows some of the air/fuel mixture to be momentarily expelled back out of the combustion chamber, preventing the speed from increasing. The effect is considerably improved fuel economy.

In other aspects the i-VTEC system operates as it has in the past and switches the valve timing during acceleration to achieve powerful, torquey performance. A drive-by-wire system provides precise control of the throttle while the valve timing is switched over, ensuring the changes are imperceptible to the driver.

These technical enhancements combine to achieve class leading performance that's on a par with a 2.0-litre engine. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h of 8.6 and 9.1 seconds and fuel consumption of 6.4 and 6.6 l/100 km for the 5-door and 4-door respectively, mean it establishes new standards for this size of engine.

Powertrain: high-revving 2.0-litre engine for Type R
The Type R's 2.0 litre DOHC i-VTEC naturally-aspirated engine featuring VTC variable inlet camshaft technology has undergone extensive reworking. It is now more responsive and, thanks to the new electronic throttle valve and the addition of a balancer shaft, is more smooth-running.

The engine continues to offer the same high torque and exciting driving experience as before, but the high rpm VTEC range is now broader and more accessible. The switch to long duration valve timing in the reworked engine covers the range from 5,400 to 8,000 rpm up to the peak power output of 201 hp. With previous engines, this output was available up to a speed of 7,900 rpm. The driver is informed of the cam change via an i-VTEC indicator just to the right of the digital speedometer.

The 100 km/h sprint comes up in 6.6 seconds and top speed is 235 km/h, performance figures that are identical to the Civic Type R in its previous incarnation, yet the engine's delivery is now more harmonic.

Improved aerodynamics in comparison with its predecessor, combined with a gear ratio that makes better usage of the high-revving engine, ensure that the somewhat greater kerb weight is completely compensated for.


Chassis: 5-door hatchback
As the Civic 5-door hatchback was specifically developed for Europe, it was thoroughly tested in Europe with European drivers, to attain ride and handling standards to European tastes. With a special emphasis on stability and sporty handling, top marks in the C category were achieved. Overall body rigidity was also increased compared to the previous Civic.

The new Honda Civic is easy to drive thanks to its driver-oriented interior with great visibility and excellent ergonomics. It's also fun to drive thanks to responsive handling and great steering feel that should appeal to the sporty driver.

A wide track and comparatively long wheelbase is just part of the story. The front suspension uses a proven MacPherson strut featuring a higher castor setting and a quicker EPS (Electric Power Steering) ratio. The front sub-frame's pressed steel centre member and aluminium cast side members filter out vibrations and improve overall comfort and refinement. Steering stability is further improved by optimising the damper mountings and compliance bushings and overall performance is enhanced by the sophisticated damper design. Lateral forces are contained by a special spring while the aluminium lower arm saves weight and raises rigidity.

At the rear the torsion beam configuration is designed to create a virtual arm length that optimises the position of the roll centre. Excellent damping performance is provided by high-response mono tube dampers, with coil springs that are totally independent. Suspension geometry was carefully calculated to achieve outstanding high speed stability.

The electric power steering generates best-in-class feel; higher output, lower inertia, increased rigidity, lower friction, enhanced controllability and lower consumption are among its key benefits when compared to a hydraulic system.


Chassis: Type R Suspension
The Civic 5-door's surefooted handling provided the ideal basis for the more sporty requirements of the Type R derivative.

The Type R's overtly sporting character is reflected in an even more highly-tuned set up, with unique spring, damper and bush characteristics as well as a 15 mm reduced ride height. In addition, it takes the already stiff Civic body structure and introduces extra strengthening in the forward floor area, around the upper suspension mountings, and across the front of the engine bay to provide a rock-solid platform for even more responsive handling.

The Type R's 18" alloy wheels and 225/40 YR18 tyres and exclusive steering-assist setting contribute to the car's pin sharp responses to driver input. The ventilated front brake discs are 300 mm and at the rear, 260 mm solid discs help to stop the vehicle.


Chassis: 4-door sedan revised chassis for agile handling, refined ride
The 4-door models feature their own unique suspension configuration and compared with their predecessors, the re-engineered chassis featuring MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link double wishbone suspension at the rear delivers more agile handling and refined ride comfort.

Key front suspension features include a higher caster angle, inversely wound springs that improve straight line stability and changes to bushings, material rigidity and spring and shock tuning to give excellent linear suspension movement for better tyre adhesion and flatter cornering.

At the rear, better damper positioning and more suspension travel allow bumps and harsh road surfaces to be soaked up with ease, while improved camber characteristics improve the overall sporty feel of the vehicle.


Safety
The new Civic is one of the safest cars in its class. All models are equipped with ABS and, for optimum performance, Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) to achieve maximum braking performance and stability. The Civic also features Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) across the range designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and managing the throttle and brake systems.

Passive safety has always been paramount at Honda and as well as front, side and curtain SRS airbags (depending on model) and double pre-tensioners on the front seatbelts, Civic models have an innovative seat belt reminder system for rear passengers displayed on the instrument panel. The SRS unit determines the status of each seatbelt buckle and sends the information to the display.

Active front seat headrests play a key role in protecting against whiplash injury in the event of an accident. They are shot forward by the movement of the body and protectively hold the rear of the occupant's head.

The body construction technology enhances frontal collision energy management through a network of load bearing structures. In particular, its polygonal front structure helps reduce the potential for misalignment with the frame of the opposing vehicle, so increasing compatibility between vehicles of different size categories.

The body structure disperses energy away from the passenger area through multiple load-bearing channels including the side sill, floor frame and A-pillar in order to reduce cabin deformation. For side impacts, the Civic incorporates a high-grade, high-strength steel body side frame structure, particularly around the door openings.

To help reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, the Civic's bonnet and wing areas are designed to deform if contacted by the head of an adult or child pedestrian. Energy-absorbing collapsible bonnet supports, wiper arms and wing mounts are designed to allow substantial deformation in an impact.


Manufacturing
The Civic 5-door and Type R models are built at the Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd (HUM) plant in Swindon. Civic 4-door models for Europe are dual sourced from Honda's manufacturing plants in Turkey and Suzuka, Japan.

Civic Hybrid

The all-new Civic Hybrid combines modern and distinctive styling with a new 1.3-litre 3-stage i-VTEC engine in combination with an efficient Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to deliver economical motoring.

The Civic Hybrid, in its compact package, employs intelligent engine functions and an efficient IMA system, giving a powerful performance of a 1.8-litre engine while attainting a world-leading level of emissions performance with 109g/km.

The Civic Hybrid is essentially a Civic 4-door sedan (as described in previous chapter) with a different powertrain.

Civic Hybrid Powertrain
The 3-stage i-VTEC engine employs three hydraulic pathways to couple and uncouple five rocker arm assemblies, providing three stages of valve control depending on the driving conditions to achieve a combination of responsive driving and fuel economy. During deceleration when the cylinders are idle, combustion in all four cylinders is halted and the cylinders are sealed shut, reducing pumping losses caused by the engine. VCM (Variable Cylinder Management), the technology used to shut the cylinders, is also used to shut all four cylinders when only little torque is required, during low speed cruising. In this mode the vehicle is powered by the electric motor only, with the pistons running idle. Virtually everything possible has been done to reduce friction as well, including the use of aluminum die-cast pistons, which feature low thermal expansion for less friction under high-temperature conditions, ion-plated piston rings, and plateau honing of the cylinder walls for a smoother surface.

Honda's independently developed electric motor employs coils with high-density windings and high-performance magnets to attain high output with a compact size. The inverter used to control motor speed-also independently developed and manufactured by Honda-is integrated with the motor's ECU for more precise digital control, contributing to great motor efficiency and fuel economy. A compact, custom designed battery storage box offers cooling performance and vibration resistance for improved long-term reliability.

The engine features Honda's i-DSI (intelligent Dual and Sequential Ignition) system that uses two spark plugs per cylinder and allows for more complete combustion of the fuel by firing the two spark plugs either at the same time or sequentially, depending on the driving condition.

Also, a dynamic regenerative braking system is employed that hydraulically controls the brakes based on the amount of brake regeneration. This permits maximum braking regeneration along with smooth deceleration that conforms to brake-pedal pressure. The air conditioner features a hybrid compressor that is powered by both the engine and the motor. When the engine is in Idle Stop mode the compressor is powered by the motor; if rapid cooling is required it is powered by the engine and motor combined. When the temperature is stable it runs off the motor alone, for both improved comfort and fuel savings.

Honda's all-new, third generation CR-V delivers a driving experience as good as a D-sector saloon, improved equipment levels and Honda's latest advanced safety technology, yet remains as practical as ever.

Its immensely popular predecessors, set new standards in the SUV sector and became a benchmark vehicle for its impressive road manners and versatility. With the market becoming increasingly crowded, Honda has raised the bar further, and the latest CR-V has even better handling and ride comfort, more car-like styling, greater comfort and a more luxurious interior, reflecting the growing demand for quality and premium products in the compact SUV market. In short, the new range injects a dynamic sense of style and refinement, successfully bridging the gap between sport and utility.


Safety
Added security is provided by Honda's VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) on all models, the system designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying brake force to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and managing the throttle. VSA is designed to complement the Real Time 4WD system.

It is supplemented by Trailer Stability Assist which ensures, by using a combination of reduced engine torque and selective braking, that the vehicle is slowed to a safe and stable speed if snaking should occur while towing.

Active Front Lighting, the system whereby the driver's view of the road ahead is enhanced by high intensity discharge (HID) low beam headlamps turning in the direction the vehicle is heading, is also offered on the CR-V for the first time.

A full complement of passive safety measures includes dual stage SRS front airbags, side airbags for front seat passengers, full length curtain airbags, and front and rear seatbelt reminders, all fitted as standard, with active front headrests on all models except S grade.

Honda has also thoughtfully provided five ISOFIX fittings on the rear seats. That means either two child seats can be installed, one on each outer seat, or one on the central seat. Also, since the rear seats slide, a parent can reach over and tend to a young child sitting in the rear by sliding the seat fully forward. And in another neat touch, Honda has provided a ‘conversation' mirror which allows easy communication with rear seat passengers without twisting round, but equally enables a parent to keep a watchful eye on an infant in the back. It's accessed simply by opening up the sunglasses holder to the half way point and is standard on ES and Executive models.

The previous CR-V set new standards for vehicle safety and the new model builds on that reputation with the latest Honda safety technology. In common with other recent models, it features Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology for excellent crash safety characteristics. A polygonal frontal frame structure reduces the potential for vehicle to vehicle misalignment and upper and lower energy absorbing pathways optimise energy distribution.

Style
The sportier styling is characterised by a ‘cab-forward' look and a coupe-like tapering side window profile, reflecting the enhanced vehicle dynamics. The frontal styling is also much bolder with a prominent bonnet and a distinctive double grille flanked by projector-style headlamps as the focal point. Muscular lower proportions, the wide track and standard 17 inch wheels emphasise the CR-V's SUV credentials. At the rear, the vertically opening tailgate's rounded glass and a sculptured lower panel add further distinction. The spare wheel is located beneath the load compartment floor.

The decision to opt for a vertically opening tailgate was based on customer feedback which indicated a preference for the easier access provided by such a design where vehicles are tightly parked.

Clever hinge construction and geometry, together with lightweight components ensure that little effort is required either to bring the tailgate down to the (high) point where it closes of its own accord, or to lift it to the (low) opening point.

The relocated spare wheel means that the new CR-V is around 105 mm shorter (4530 mm) than the previous model. At 1820 mm it is also 35 mm wider, while height is down by 30 mm (1810 mm including roof antenna). The wheelbase is reduced from 2630 to 2620 mm, and front and rear tracks at 1565 mm are 25 and 5 mm wider, respectively.

The load space is effectively ‘extended' rearwards to take up the space vacated by the former tailgate-mounted spare wheel and luggage space is now larger at 556 litres (VDA) with the rear seats in place, rising to 955 litres (VDA) with the seats folded (up to the windowline).


Interior
The new cabin blends excellent ergonomics and clever storage integration with sophisticated, modern and efficient architecture. The new, premium design features metallic trim elements applied to fascia and doors that contrast with soft textured black trim. Front seats are larger and more comfortable and the steering column is adjustable for reach as well as rake. Relocation of both manual and automatic gear levers to the base of the centre stack brings them closer to the steering wheel and creates more floor space. They are complemented by a unique, stubby handbrake located on the leading edge of the centre console. Its compact design features a button release to one side, with a clever wire linkage requiring only limited space for its operation.

The instrument cluster comprises a rev counter on the left and a speedometer on the right with white LED illumination and blue backlighting for added stylishness. Located between the two are the water temperature and fuel gauges with digital segments that are progressively illuminated. Above these appear a door closure icon and outside temperature, and finally a range of items selectable by the information switch located on the steering wheel - instantaneous fuel consumption, average consumption, vehicle range, average speed, elapsed time, odometer, or trip A/B. The automatic transmission display (where fitted) is contained within the rev counter.

The interior offers a spacious, airy environment with the same ‘command view' as the previous CR-V, with good visibility for all occupants. Also, larger door openings, a rear door that now opens to 80 degrees and lower sills make climbing in and out even easier.

Convenient storage areas are easily accessible throughout the interior and include an illuminated 6.9 litre glove box and above it a useful lidded passenger tray with a capacity of 3.1 litres. The driver's seat has a seatback pocket. Capacious door bins front and rear are able to hold a 500 ml bottle.

The 6.5 litre storage box at the rear of the centre console has sufficient capacity to hold up to 24 CD cases, and features a sliding cover for quick and easy access. It contains an auxiliary audio input jack, allowing operation of an MP3 player, as well as a 12V accessory socket. Ahead of the storage box on the right are two cupholders, and to the left a storage tray and the heated seat switches where fitted.

Twin cup holders are also contained within the rear seat centre armrest, revealed when it is folded down.


More upmarket specifications available
The availability (depending on grade) of a driver's 8-way adjustable power seat, leather upholstery, 18 inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors and a rear view camera are an indication of the CR-V's more upmarket specification. The rear-view camera is located above the licence plate and provides a 131 degree lateral view and 91 degree vertical view, with the colour image displayed on the satellite navigation screen (where fitted).

The parking sensor package comprises corner sensors front and rear and two additional inner rear sensors which relay information back to the display located in the centre of the instrument cluster. Increasing proximity to an object is communicated by a flashing symbol on a car graphic and the increasing frequency of a beeper. The rear sensors are only activated when reverse gear is selected.

The latest generation of Honda's satellite navigation system, which is optional on ES and Executive models, features a touch screen 6.5 inch display, Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition. It also has a digital audio card reader which can play MP3 and WMA files from SD, CompactFlash, and Flash ATA memory cards. The package also includes a high output audio system with four channel 43 W output plus single channel 80W output to a subwoofer.

Like the Civic range, the CR-V offers a laminated and tinted Panorama glass roof, standard on Executive models, and optional on ES. This stretches from the windscreen to a point above the rear seat to create an exceptionally light and airy cabin. From within the cabin, the glass is in effect sub-divided into two equally sized panels by the roof lining. This sub-division conceals two independent electric blinds, finished in the same quality tricot material as the roof lining, which can be extended to cover each glass section, if so desired.

The rear seats - the base is split 60:40, the seat back 40:20:40 - are able to slide through 150 mm to maximise leg room or luggage space, and can also be reclined for added comfort.

The centre section folds flat to enable longer items to be carried while still accommodating two rear seat passengers. Tumbling the seats forward and then storing them upright creates a huge load area, sufficient to accommodate two mountain bikes with their front wheels still in place.

Double Deck luggage area
The new CR-V introduces a particularly practical feature to the luggage bay - the novel ‘Double Deck' luggage area. Standard on ES and Executive models, and optional on LS, this innovative design opens up a whole new level of flexibility in load carrying. A substantial, removable shelf sits at a height of 330 mm above the load floor - sufficient to allow a standard stroller to be stowed beneath it. It means luggage can be subdivided, with that on the lower level more easily accessible. The shelf is also hinged across its width for added convenience. When not in use, the shelf can either be removed or stored snugly in a recess in the floor.

An obvious benefit is that it conceals items from prying eyes, but it also allows the possibility of much neater storage and sub-division of luggage. Further security is provided by a double retractable tonneau cover.


Brand new, fuel efficient 2.0-litre petrol engine
The 2.0-litre petrol engine is an all-new unit in the same family as the 1.8-litre SOHC i-VTEC of the Civic range. Like that engine it uses the finest of Honda's VTEC and control systems expertise together with comprehensive friction reduction technology and introduces an extra element to the mix: delayed closure of the intake valves combined with a wide open throttle valve during low-load driving conditions to reduce pumping losses and boost fuel economy.

Power and torque figures are broadly similar to the previous petrol engine - 110 kW/150 PS at a slightly lower 6,200 rpm, and 192 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

Greater engine efficiency, new gearboxes and the improved vehicle aerodynamics mean fuel economy is boosted to 8.1 and 8.2 l/100 km for manual and automatic models, respectively, compared with 9.0 and 9.3 l/100 km. Manual and automatic CO2 emissions fall to 192 and 195 g/km.

Performance is also improved and the 0 to 100 km/h sprint drops from 10.8 to 10.2 seconds for the manual model and from 13.1 to 12.1 seconds for the automatic.

The petrol engine models are equipped with brand new transmissions: either a 6-speed manual or an optional 5-speed automatic


Efficient Real Time 4WD upgraded
The CR-V, thanks to the Real Time 4WD system which automatically engages only when required, continues to offer excellent on-road security in slippery conditions and good ‘grass and gravel' terrain capability, thus maximising fuel economy.

It combines a quiet, fuel efficient, dual-pump system with a one-way cam unit to significantly enhance sensing of front-wheel slippage - all in a lightweight, compact design. The new system promptly transfers torque - 20 per cent more compared to the existing unit - to the rear wheels, and significantly improves stability during start up and cornering on snow-covered roads and other slippery surfaces. help reduce engine and road noise for an extremely quiet cabin.


More car-like handling
The new CR-V's handling characteristics are now more car-like in their character. It continues to use MacPherson struts at the front and reactive link double wishbones at the rear, but there have been key changes including a centre of gravity lowered by 25 mm, a wider track, and larger 17 inch wheels, together with a number of changes to the steering and suspension geometry. Steering response is faster and feels more direct and more directional stability, reduced body roll and greater all-round agility are the result. Measures such as improved compliance bushes and increased suspension travel bring greater comfort.

All CR-Vs are equipped with 4-channel ABS and, for optimum performance, Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) which adjusts front-to-rear brake effort to achieve maximum braking performance and stability. All models feature brake discs all round, 293 mm ventilated at the front and 302 mm solid at the rear.

Further action is provided by the Brake Assist system which automatically increases braking output when emergency conditions are detected from the manner of the driver's input to the pedal.

The brake pedal action is now slightly shorter and lighter, for better control without being over-sensitive.

The variable, speed-sensitive steering system features quick gear ratios for an agile response to driver inputs, providing greater assistance at low speeds for easier manoeuvring, and less at higher speeds for a more direct feel and stability.

High tensile steel now makes up 56 per cent of the monocoque body, up from 33.5 per cent. Around 9 per cent of that is super high grade steel, used in floor members and roof rails. The result is a 28.7 kg weight saving, but most importantly these tough, light materials contribute to an immensely efficient safety cell.

Static bending stiffness is also up by 32 per cent and better balance between front and rear lateral stiffness delivers greater handling stability and response to driver inputs.

Improved NVH was also targeted and the new model features extensive use of the latest noise absorption materials.


Wheels and tyres
LS and ES models are equipped with alloy wheels, now 17 inch, shod with 225/65 R17 tyres. 18 inch items are fitted to Executive models. Low rolling resistance tyres contribute to the overall excellent fuel economy.

Honda's new premium model combines performance, technology, comfort, safety and athletic design
With its blend of advanced cutting edge technology and an array of innovative assistance systems, the new Honda Legend steps into the luxury upper mid-range as a classic 4-door saloon. True to its dynamic styling, Honda's premium model offers a comfortable interior with sporting overtones. Its spaciousness promotes a sense of well-being and comfort.

Larger, heavier, more expensive and with a long list of optional extras - these are features common to many new models in the upper mid-range. "The new Legend," says Yasuhisa Maekawa, President of Honda R&D Europe, Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, "shows that a high level of performance, safety and comfort together with a generous interior does not necessarily result in excessive weight, not least because we can offer a premium saloon with all imaginable innovations at an attractive price, even compared with most low-end standard models of many competitors."

There is now more opportunity for challengers. A few established makes dominate the upper mid-class and luxury saloon range worldwide particularly in Europe. However, challengers' odds are increasing. Not only because they are manufacturing products of an equal quality but also that they have been known to take the technological lead in important innovations. The real reason has much more to do with once resolutely loyal buyers distancing themselves from their traditional makes for a variety of reasons.


Body structure
The elegant design of the Legend confirms status, while the body's dynamic lines represent a sporting temperament - an early hint at the power of the up-to-date engine. A characteristic feature of the front is the steep sloping hood. From the side, the sleek cockpit, a deep window beltline and a short deck lid accentuate the Legend's pronounced wedge shape. The new Legend is 20mm higher and 25mm wider than its predecessor. The overall length, however, has been reduced by 38mm, and the wheelbase by 110mm; nevertheless there is an extra 30mm to the length of the passenger compartment and 40mm to the height of the interior. The result is a far more generous cabin size despite reductions in the overall body length. Passengers are treated as standard to an ambience of refinement, with its immaculate attention to ergonomics, leather upholstery, and 8-way power adjustable front seats.

Excellent aerodynamics and a remarkably low noise level
With a highly efficient drag coefficient figure and a low overall height of 1.45 metres, the new Legend is streamlined in a way otherwise only seen in sports coupés. This pays dividends in the form of saving fuel at higher speeds as well as reducing wind noise to an imperceptible level. The results of intricate tests dictated that a significant reduction of high frequency and middle-frequency noise was a condition of the Legend's rebuild.
Instead of the traditional heavy insulation, light materials are used which are also highly efficient in absorbing sound. For example, the inner wing insulator. A rubber-type layer ensures that noise from uneven or wet surfaces is significantly reduced. The floor is also covered completely by a protective layer which is anti-corrosive as well as sound-absorbing. The underside is designed so that body vibrations are eliminated by the insulation material, providing an acoustic barrier between the cabin and the road.

The subframes for integrating engine and gearbox are in a ‘floating' position to create an acoustic barrier between the main source of vibration (the engine) and the large resonance volume (body). Any low-frequency noises which still penetrate the cabin are eliminated by an Active Noise Cancellation unit (ANC) specifically developed for this model. The system uses two microphones located in the roof console. The microphones monitor drive train noises entering the cabin. When unwanted frequencies are detected, the ANC creates a counter-frequency and sends a precisely timed reverse phase audio signal to the audio system's door speakers and subwoofer. The ANC overrides vibrations and cancels out unwanted frequencies. This creates peace within the car and, in every possible way, replaces traditional, heavy sound insulating material.


Intelligent lightweight structure
Cars with an array of safety technology and elevated comforts usually weigh in at more than less-equipped models of the same range. For this reason, most makes offer basic models as ‘slimmed down versions'. Honda takes another, more logical approach and has fully-equipped the Legend in almost all of its markets. However, to keep the potential weight down as much as possible, developers of the new Legend have made an intelligently lightweight structure. The body - the component with the highest mass - to an extent is made of high-tensile sheet metal allowing for thin wall thickness. In addition, the hood, front wings and chassis components, such as subframes and wishbones, are made from aluminium; the drive shaft is made from a lightweight carbon fibre reinforced composite. Extensive use of these lightweight materials keeps the kerb weight of the 5metre car below 1885 kg - while maintaining excellent body rigidity.

Comfort
The Legend's interior combines elegant luxury with clear, efficient design, providing an ambience which complements the car's athleticism. At the same time, various latest technological features have been selected to enable simple and intuitive use of the controls. A meticulously thought-out interior harmony contributes to making the driver at ease, by assisting in difficult driving situations and eliminating unnecessary distractions.

Particular attention has been paid to the high quality and workmanship of materials. Ergonomical seating with perforated leather-trim creates a driving experience which is sporty and at the same time refined. Maple wood trim sweeps across the instrument panel, while the centre console housing the climate, audio and navigation controls has a satin metal finish for a more technical look. The main instrumentation and the large, bright navigation display are easy-to-read. All important controls are within easy reach of the driver.

Engine/Transmission - Superior source of power
The new Legend's 3.5 litre SOHC VTEC V6 engine is an absolute hi-tech collective and one of the most powerful in its class. The modern aluminium 4-valve engine with adjustable valve control and electronic valve lift control produces 217 kW (295 PS) at 6,200 rpm. The maximum torque of 351 Nm at 5,000 rpm provides for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

With the standard 5-speed automatic transmission, the driver can select gears manually - either by using the shift lever in the centre console or paddles located on the steering wheel. The transmission together with the intelligent gearshift system, Grade Logic Control, provides consistent propulsion especially for hill driving. The Shift Hold Control system works together with the electronic accelerator and benefits sporty drivers on winding roads. Both systems work together to reduce unnecessary shifts during climbs or negotiating corners in automatic mode.


Chassis
The Legend's innovative chassis has double wishbones as the front suspension and multi-link as the rear. This sophisticated technology allows for a good flat ride and safe cornering even on uneven road surfaces.

Large, ventilated front and rear disc brakes and 4-piston callipers provide exceptional stopping power. Electronic aids such as ABS, EBD, VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) support the driver in potentially dangerous situations.


Super Handling All-Wheel Drive
The Honda Legend has an all-wheel drive system as standard to improve cornering ability. The SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system increases the rotation speed of the outside rear wheel during spirited cornering to help the car turn more easily. This dramatically improves handling through well-balanced over-steering in sharp corners.

During straight line cruising and moderate cornering up to 70 per cent of torque is delivered to the front wheels, full throttle acceleration or spirited driving directs up to 70 per cent of available torque to the rear wheels. Depending on the driving situation, the available torque at the rear axle can be distributed in a range of 100:0 to 0:100 between both rear wheels. The result is enhanced cornering performance and guaranteed maximum driving pleasure.

This intelligent all-wheel technology developed by Honda engineers also improves cornering safety: The SH-AWD system is activated if the driver applies too much pressure on the brakes on a corner and varies the distribution of power to the individual wheels, so that driving stability, within its physical limits, remains constant.


Vehicle Stability Assist
The Honda Legend is equipped with an electronic Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. This is comparable to the popular and highly developed ESP system, except that in Honda's premium model it is closely integrated with the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. VSA is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during sudden manoeuvres.

A microprocessor calculates a predicted range of vehicle responses and co-ordinates the ideal distribution of braking power to each wheel as necessary, activates the throttle system and controls the ignition. With controlled acceleration, partial braking intervention and responsive acceleration of individual wheels, VSA can keep the car on its intended course.

Safety
The new Legend's highly rigid body structure guarantees a high level of passenger safety in a variety of crash situations together with a combination of dual stage front and side airbag systems and curtain airbags. The ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) Body Structure helps disperse collision forces away from the passenger compartment onto the overall body structure. With the intelligent positioning of frame components, in a head on collision, for example, the collision energy is dispersed more over the entire frontal area and over the prominent side structure. The ACE Body Structure also contributes to the protection of other passengers, especially in smaller vehicles.


Setting a good example
The new Legend's specially designed front structure frame provides for improved partner protection in the event of a crash with a smaller vehicle: the front structure is designed to buckle relatively easily. In a vehicle-to-vehicle collision this body component, by buckling, absorbs a large part of the impact and adapts to the safety structure of the other vehicle. This is because the energy, which cannot be absorbed by the smaller car's more unyielding body and can therefore impact the passenger compartment, is also reduced through the specific frontal structure of the large Honda saloon.


Improved pedestrian safety
A pop-up hood further enhances pedestrian safety. On collision, three touch sensors in the front bumper detect the danger and activate a pyrotechnic actuator. In a fraction of a second, the rear edge of the hood lifts by 100mm. This provides ample clearance between the hood and the hard engine components beneath it. If the head or shoulder of a pedestrian hits the relatively soft hood, this will buckle. The pop-up hood can therefore significantly reduce the risk of serious injury.


Increased safety at night
The new Legend comes as standard with the Active Front Lighting System (AFS). The main headlights beam white, ultra bright xenon light. The term AFS stands for Honda's interpretation of an advanced combination of corner and indicator lighting, which illuminates the road effectively in the driving direction. The left headlight swivels left and the right unit swivels to the right, to fully illuminate corners and junctions at night. This helps the driver negotiate difficult situations when driving at night and provides better recognition of pedestrians or other obstructions.


Navigation and Communication
The new Legend features as standard satellite navigation system with voice-recognition. The complete digital map information is provided on a DVD. A high performance processor allows fast route calculation and new software zooms in on the map display in virtually real-time.

Good news for mobile phone users. Every Legend is equipped with an integral hands-free kit. The installation of Bluetooth technology guarantees that all current mobile phones - regardless of the manufacturer - can be used: After an initial ‘pairing' between the mobile and the car, the driver's mobile is recognised as soon as the ignition is started and can stay in a jacket pocket or even in the boot when making or receiving phone calls. The driver dials and accepts calls by using the buttons on the steering wheel or by voice-recognition.


Experience music with high-end intensity
For an exceptional audio experience, the Honda Legend is fitted with an up-to-date Bose® audio system. With the ten speakers, engineered specifically for the Legend by the American Bose® team, the cabin becomes a concert hall. Surround sound is delivered to all five seating positions. The integral 6-disc CD player can play DVD audio, CD and MP3 media. Selected audio system functions can be controlled by voice recognition. Music tracks or CDs, for example, can be changed via voice command.

Accord / Accord Tourer

The award winning Honda D-segment quality/premium contender underwent a facelift for 2006. As well as exterior and interior design alterations, the Accord now includes a voice recognition satellite navigation system with the RDS (Radio Data System) function, which helps the driver avoid road congestions.


The main exterior alterations are concentrated on the front area of both the saloon and Tourer versions of the Accord. These include a new front bumper, grille, hood and headlights. Both body styles also get new designs for the 16" and 17" alloy wheels.

Unique to the saloon are the rear styling changes, which are a new rear bumper, rear combination lights, and a new side sill garnish. The Tourer also gets altered side sill garnish and chrome plating of quarter moulding, as well as roof rails, now longer than the outgoing model, as standard equipment.

The changes inside the cabin are common to both body styles. The instrument panel has been newly designed and now includes a three-meter cluster being illuminated in a different colour. The steering wheel has a thicker grip and there is a subtle addition of a metal coloured ornamental ring around the horn pad. The shift knob has a new design on both automatic and manual transmissions.

Among the new equipment available is a voice recognition RDS navigation system. Through a series of set voice commands, the navigation system can be operated by the driver without taking his eyes from the road. Another useful addition to the navigation system is the RDS function; the system can recognise live traffic hotspots and recalculate the ideal route so as to avoid the congestion. There is also a hands-free telephone system with steering wheel mounted operational buttons and an automatic radio mute function whenever the telephone is in operation. Furthermore, the volume of the sound system is linked to the speed of the vehicle, so the higher the speed, the higher the volume of the music.

In terms of powertrains, the new Accord has the same engine line up as before; however, the 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine has undergone some changes to enhance driveability. It now utilises DBW (drive-by-wire) enabling both the maximum power and torque to be attained at 500rpm lower engine speed than before. In addition, models equipped with this engine now have VSA (vehicle stability assist) as standard equipment.

Honda's compact multi-purpose vehicle, featuring six seats arranged in two rows of three, now has a new engine line-up together with a series of detail exterior and interior changes for the 2007 Model Year.

The 1.7 and 2.0 litre petrol engines are replaced by the 140 PS 1.8 litre SOHC i-VTEC unit familiar from the Civic range.

Offering exceptional performance and economy and as well as the latest VTEC and friction reduction technology, it also introduces an extra element to the mix: delayed intake valve closure combined with a wide open throttle valve during low-load driving conditions to reduce pumping losses and boost fuel economy.

Externally, 2007 models can be distinguished by a new dark chrome finish to the grille, headlights, door handles, rear combination light and lower licence plate trim. Inside a new greyish blue soft touch fabric is applied to seats and doors (grey leather seats together with beige soft touch fabric on the doors continue on right-hand drive EX grade models) while all models now have a high-tech metal finish applied to the fascia panel. An additional boot light provides added convenience.

A number of items have also been improved, including the front seat headrests, the back seat armrest, while the front middle seat tray, revealed by flipping forward the front half of the seat squab, now features two compartments and cup holders with lids.

The FR-V is now also provided with an auxiliary jack for an iPod or similar audio storage device (all right-hand drive models and Comfort and Executive left-hand drive models).

Otherwise the FR-V continues to offer an outstandingly flexible, practical and intelligent interior in a stylish body and fun driving dynamics. With all six seats in two rows, it's easy for everyone in the car to talk to each other, making it a more friendly way to travel.

It also leaves space for a large boot, and when more space for luggage is needed, the FR-V comes into its own. Not only do the three rear seats fold individually, they fold flat into the floor. So maximum space is achieved without having to remove and then store bulky seats. They can also be folded one-handed, simply by reaching in from the boot and unfastening a single latch.

To add to the numerous space combinations, the back of the central front seat also folds
down to allow extra-long items to be carried, or to form a table.

The Honda Jazz is still one of the most innovative and space efficient small cars on the market and boasts a B-segment exterior, C-segment interior, clever packaging, ‘Magic' seats and some of the most fuel efficient petrol engines around. Fresh exterior styling, more advanced and stylish instrumentation and the availability of Vehicle Stabilty Assist for the first time are among the changes that were recently implemented.


Styling refreshed
Jazz's innovative, monoform design with its ‘short nose' and flared, muscular wheel arches give the Jazz a broad, purposeful stance, while the rising lower edge of the side windows and the gradually falling roof line give more than a hint of coupe-like styling. The latest changes are aimed at providing a more quality, dynamic and solid look and bumpers both front and rear have been restyled with sweeping contours that flare out at each corner. A new 15 inch 9 spoke alloy wheel is fitted as standard for the ES grade.

1.4 Sport models have their own unique look, with a front bumper that features a large lower opening with a mesh grille and gill-like side strakes. At the rear the bumper sweeps upwards to emphasise the Jazz's low front/high rear form. Matching side sills flare out at the rear. 10 spoke 15 x 6JJ alloy wheels are standard.

Both grades now feature a stylish, more cylindrical headlamp design with chrome finish and more fully integrated parking lights. The inner surface of the light cluster has a silver finish on 1.4 ES and a body colour one on 1.4 Sport. As part of the redesign, the indicators are now more streamlined, maintaining the continuity of the frontal styling. At the rear the taillight now features a colour turn lens.

Door mirror-mounted LED indicators already seen on other Honda models are now fitted.


New high-tech controls
Turning to the interior the new Jazz has a new sporty steering wheel with metallic trim and audio controls located on the left hand side. Models equipped with CVT-7 - Honda's continuously variable transmission - now have steering wheel mounted paddles in place of buttons. The left hand paddle is used to change down, that on the right to change up a gear, in true Formula 1 style, while a ‘7 Speed Mode' button on the right switches between sequential and automatic modes. The escutcheon surrounding the floor-mounted change lever now has a metallic paint finish for added quality.

A smart new radio/CD player is now standard equipment. The funky design consists of a unit fully integrated into the fascia, with a digital display flanked by a large circular control switch for radio/CD/ waveband selection and a central knob for on/off and volume. Beneath the digital display are separate toggle switches for tune and seek/skip.

Fully automatic air conditioning is available. The design of the controls complements the appearance of the audio unit and comprises a distinctive ‘wing' shaped motif; an easy to read central LCD display of temperature and air distribution is flanked on either side by toggle type switches providing temperature (right) and fan speed (left) adjustment.


Blacked-out instrumentation
Jazz models now feature self-illuminating main instrumentation similar to that found on the Accord range. The three individual dials, with their silver outer trim, now appear darkened with the ignition off, transforming to a bright display when the door lock is released and an even higher contrast one when the ignition is switched on, thanks to the use of backlighting. The highly legible instruments feature white numerals and red-illuminated needles and surround, while an outside temperature display is now incorporated.

Honda's iconic two-seater roadster was revised in 2006 with changes to aesthetics and performance. The Honda S2000 kept its famed high-revving, 240PS 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine, but since 2006 this now has a drive-by-wire system for better throttle control and improved engine management. The DBW throttle set-up allows for the introduction of Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and is available as an option for the first time. VSA is designed to help the driver keep control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres. It works by applying brake force to different wheels as necessary and managing the throttle and ignition systems.

There are two new colours to choose from: Deep Burgundy metallic and a vibrant Bermuda Blue pearlescent. These are complemented by attractive, new 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels. And on the inside there's a new interior combination of brown (Birch) and black, while the aluminium trim elements on the centre console now carry a black finish. There's also an outside temperature gauge as part of the standard dashboard display.

And ‘top down' motoring needn't mean compromised enjoyment of the audio system, thanks to the introduction of 60W speakers that fit within each side of the two roll-over hoops located just behind the head rests.

ASIMO - an overview of Honda's latest generation of advanced humanoid robots

The development of a robot that can move like, interact with and be of assistance to humans is recognised as one of the great technological challenges of the 21st Century. At the forefront of attempts to scale this "scientific Everest" is ASIMO - Honda's latest generation of humanoid robots.

Recognised by many leading academics as being a major step forward in humanoid robotics, ASIMO was first introduced to the European scientific community at a symposium entitled "From High Tech to Intelligence - The Challenge of Humanoid Robots" held at the Technical University of Darmstadt on 30th of June 2003.

Since then, ASIMO has travelled throughout Europe with a tour which has included many prestigious scientific and robotics events. It is also used extensively to inspire young people about science and engineering, attending events such as the European Commission's ‘Researcher's Night' in Brussels and the Youth Engineering Summit in the UK.

Whilst in Europe, ASIMO has met a number of important dignitaries including: former Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla, former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, His Royal Highness Juan Carlos, the King of Spain, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Guy Verhofstadt, the Belgian Prime Minister, HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum of Dubai.

In December 2006, ASIMO appeared in Honda's (UK) ‘warm technology' advertising campaign. The television advertisement followed ASIMO on a journey of discovery through the corridors and exhibits of a science museum and brought the story of Honda's ground breaking humanoid robotics programme to a whole new audience.


ASIMO - why create a humanoid robot?
Honda's long-term commitment to the development of humanoid robots stretches back two decades and was originated by the desire of its associates (employees) to take on a unique engineering and technological challenge in the field of mobility. The company developed its first robot to walk on two legs in 1986. The ground-breaking programme that followed has been inspired by Honda's commitment to innovation and the development of advanced products that will deliver real benefits to people now and in the future.

Honda's vision is to create a humanoid robot capable of interacting with and supporting humans to make our lives easier and more pleasant. Although there is a long way to go before specific roles can be assigned to humanoid robots, it might be possible that they could provide assistance and give greater independence to the disabled and elderly.

Although the market potential and application of ASIMO is still to be defined, it has already resulted in a number of benefits to Honda. First it has provided a unique and compelling showcase for Honda's world class engineering and technological capabilities, which in turn has enabled the company to achieve its objective of recruiting and retaining the very best engineers and R&D specialists. Various technologies obtained through the research and development of ASIMO will also be applied to other areas of Honda, such as automotive safety technology. These will include posture control and recognition technologies and also making things smaller and lighter. In addition, Honda believes the positive reception given to ASIMO across the world, especially from young people, will serve to inspire the next generation of engineers.

ASIMO - the world's most advanced humanoid robots
ASIMO (standing for Advanced Step in Innovative MObility) is regarded by many as the most advanced generation of two-legged humanoid robots in the world.

In terms of ASIMO's movement, Honda has studied and used as its model the complex co-ordinated movements of the human body. ASIMO's proportions and joint positions resemble those of a human being and, in many respects, it possesses a range of movement comparable to that of humans.

Utilising new advanced motion technology developed by Honda, ASIMO cannot only walk forwards and backwards but also turn sideways, climb up and down stairs and turn corners. As such, ASIMO is the closest robot yet to replicating the natural walking motion of humans.

Central to this is the application of Honda's intelligent walking technology, which allows ASIMO to walk flexibly in real time. It does this by enabling the robot to make predictions and adjust its motion accordingly. For example just as a human being when going round a corner will lean into it to adjust their centre of gravity towards the inside, so ASIMO also predicts its next steps and adjusts its centre of gravity accordingly. This ability to predict its next movement in real time also allows ASIMO to walk continuously. It doesn't have to stop first, turn and then walk round a corner; instead it accomplishes this in one uninterrupted fluid motion.

In December 2005, Honda announced a series of exciting and cutting-edge technological developments for the ‘New ASIMO'. These included: an ability to carry out a number of key tasks in a real-life environment, such as carrying and receiving objects; manoeuvre a trolley; and automatically operate in co-operation with people, such as walking hand-in-hand. The mobility of this ‘New ASIMO' was also dramatically improved, making it capable of running at 6 km/hour and 5 km/hour in a circular pattern. Indeed, ASIMO is now recognised as the fastest humanoid in the world.


ASIMO - towards an intelligent robot
In addition to the major mechanical engineering advances, Honda's ongoing research programme focuses on the development of intelligent behaviour in ASIMO.

Honda defines intelligence as "the ability to develop problem-solving strategies to achieve a specific objective by recognising and analysing, associating and combining, planning and deciding". Honda is the first to recognise that ASIMO is a long way from having these abilities but believes progress has been made.

Towards this goal, ASIMO has been fitted with a number of intelligence technology features. These include the ability to recognise people, objects and gestures, calculate distances and the direction of movement of several objects and create flexible routes to a destination. This visual information is registered, interpreted and translated into actions. This gives ASIMO a range of abilities from avoiding objects in its path to recognising that someone wants to shake its hand and reacting by offering a handshake.

To a certain extent ASIMO can also hear and speak. It can identify voices, distinguish between sounds and the spoken word and respond to certain instructions and exchange simple sentences and greetings with a person. Currently ASIMO can understand about 50 different calls and greetings as well as 30 different commands and can react to them accordingly.

However, the road to intelligent behaviour remains a long one. The model for intelligence - the brain - must first be better understood before similar principles of processing can be applied to humanoid robots. Whilst Honda continues to make progress in this area of research, it is anticipated that it will be at least 10-15 years before ASIMO's intelligence matches its existing high level of mobility.

To develop this understanding of intelligent systems, Honda has established three research institutes around the world. These centres, which are located in Japan, America and Germany, also collaborate with a number of institutions pursuing similar goals. Indeed, in Europe alone Honda Research Institute (Germany) works with 17 universities and independent research institutes to further its understanding of intelligence.


The history of Honda's humanoid robotics development and ASIMO
Following in the footsteps of Honda's cars, motorcycles and power products, Honda has taken up a new challenge in mobility - the development of a two-legged humanoid robot.

The main concept behind Honda's robot research and development was to create a more viable mobility that allows robots to help and live in harmony with people.

Research began by envisioning the ideal robot form for use in human society. The robot would need to be able to manoeuvre between objects in a room and be able to go up and down stairs. For this reason it had to have two legs, just like a person.

In addition, if two-legged walking technology could be established, the robot would need to be able to walk on uneven ground and even to be able to function in a wide range of environments.

Although considered extremely difficult at the time, Honda set itself this ambitious goal and developed revolutionary new technology to create a two-legged walking robot.

The first experimental models were made in 1986. These models were successful in moving two legs alternately, but could only perform a linear "static" walk at very slow pace of about 5 seconds per step. "Dynamic walk" was the key to increase the speed and to walk on all terrain types (bumps, slopes, etc.). In December 2004, almost twenty years after the research programme began, Honda engineers achieved another major breakthrough - running. Defined as having two feet off the ground at the same time, the robots initial running speed was restricted to 3km/h in a straight line. This has since improved with the ‘New ASIMO', unveiled in December 2005, which is able to run at 6km/h in a straight line and 5km/h in a slalom or in a circular pattern.

Whilst a running robot is not in itself a goal of Honda's humanoid robot development programme, a robot that can help people must be agile, perfectly balanced and quick to respond. Indeed, ASIMO's ability to run demonstrates that it is close to having the necessary mobility to operate in a dynamic and complex human environment.

Honda Racing F1 Team Launches Pioneering Environmental Concept

The Honda Racing F1 Team today embarked on a major new initiative for the 2007 Formula 1 season. To help raise awareness of the environmental issues facing the planet, the RA107 F1 car will simply feature a huge image of earth, in place of the advertising and sponsor logos which have featured and dominated all other F1 cars for decades.

The car's new look is a powerful call to action for fans, sponsors, customers and members of the public to join Honda's commitment to help address the environmental issues facing the world.

Via the website www.myearthdream.com anyone who wishes, will have the opportunity to have their name on the car, make a pledge to make a lifestyle change to improve the environment and make a donation to an environmental charity. Under the concept of "our car is your car", each name will form a tiny individual pixel which will help build the image of planet earth on the car. Each name will be visible on the website when you make the pledge or under a microscope on the car.

Universal Music, the largest music company in the world, and Gatorade are the first global brands to partner the team in this exciting new concept.
