Four racers guided through CBT by the Honda School of Motorcycling

With a wealth of collective motorsport experience behind them, four Honda racers completed their Compulsory Bike Training with the Honda School of Motorcycling.

Honda UK saw four racing riders and drivers through their CBT (Compulsory Bike Training) courtesy of HSM (Honda School of Motorcycling). Riding motorcycles from Honda’s broad 125cc model-range, the motorsport professionals underwent the training in and around Honda UK’s Bracknell head office.

Swapping steering wheels for handlebars, Jess Hawkins and Dan Cammish, the latter of Halfords Yuasa Racing, took to a motorcycle for the first time in a bid to complete their CBT. Despite the pair’s experience in W-Series and BTCC, they welcomed the thoroughness of the training they received from HSM instructors on the day.

Honda Racing riders Andrew Irwin and Tom Neave participated too. The pair have made great strides aboard the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2 contesting the British Superbike and National Superstock 1000 championships, respectively. Neither had ever turned a motorcycle wheel on the public highway so were eager to begin their road-riding journeys.

Proceedings kicked-off in the classroom to run through the necessary basics. Jess, Dan, Andrew and Tom then familiarised themselves with the controls of the CB125F, CB125R, MSX125 and Monkey 125, which they were riding, respectively, before progressing onto a series of exercises designed to develop their core riding skills.

Finally, the quartet rode on the public highway under the supervision of an HSM guide, from whom they received instruction via intercom for the duration of the assessment.

Returning from two hours of road-riding; Jess, Dan, Andrew and Tom were handed their official CBT certification, entitling them to ride a 125cc motorcycle, displaying L-plates, on the public highway.

All the riders and drivers had their say at the day’s end:

Jess: “I’m super happy to have passed! After 15 minutes it was fine, I settled in, I knew what was going on and the bikes were suprsingly quite quick"

Dan: “With Tom, Andrew and Jess we all got a little bit competitive. Give us something with an engine and we are going to have fun! We had a good day out and I loved every minute of it.”

Andrew: “I really want to do the next stage of the bike test. Hopefully, in the not too distant future I can get riding on the roads back home!”

Tom: “Yeah, I definitely want to get my big bike license sorted out so I can get on an Africa Twin or something with a bit more power!”
