  1. Introduction: Expanded and refreshed Type R line-up continues to deliver the most rewarding driving experience in the hot hatch segment

  • Honda expands Civic Type R line-up with the addition of two new models: Civic Type R Limited Edition and Civic Type R Sport Line
  • Limited Edition is the purest Civic Type R to date
  • Type R Sport Line model combines outstanding performance with stealthier design and increased comfort
  • All 2020 Civic Type R models receive styling upgrades and performance enhancements
  • Type R models retain the heritage of Honda’s high-performance hatchback bloodline
  • New intelligent Honda LogR app allows the driver to interrogate logged vehicle performance data

Honda is expanding the appeal of the Civic Type R range with the introduction of two new variants, Limited Edition and Sport Line. Each model offers a different style and performance proposition to the standard Type R GT, further broadening the appeal of Honda's award-winning hatchback.

The new Limited Edition is the most extreme version of Civic Type R to date. It is built for ultimate on-track performance, with new lightweight components and a stripped-back interior both of which contribute to a 47kg weight reduction, plus enhanced driving dynamics and stand-out styling. Just 100 of the range-topping variant will be available in Europe.

The second new addition to the Type R range is the Sport Line, designed to appeal to customers who want a stealthier look from their performance hatchback, but still desire the outstanding performance that is a trademark of Type R models. The Sport Line features a low-deck rear spoiler instead of the standard high-level wing, 19-inch alloy wheels and a black interior.

Each variant in the enhanced Type R range retains the heritage of Honda’s high-performance hatchback bloodline, combining the purity of front-wheel drive chassis dynamics with aggressive design and finely-honed aerodynamics.

All models in the newly expanded 2020 Honda Civic Type R line-up, including the standard Type R GT, receive a number of styling and dynamic enhancements. The lower fog light surrounds feature a new symmetrical design incorporating smooth surfaces and sleek styling blades. While full LED headlight clusters and daytime running lights complete the cleaner visual effect that feature across the Honda Civic range.

The suspension of the 2020 Civic Type R has also been upgraded for more responsive handling and sharper steering feel. For improved stopping performance, the refreshed Civic Type R features an enhanced braking system, with two-piece floating front brake discs and new brake pads.

The 2020 model also benefits from the addition of Active Sound Control (ASC) which features individual settings for the Type R’s Sport, +R and Comfort driving modes. It works to enhance the engine sound during aggressive driving in Sport and +R modes and refines it in Comfort mode during acceleration.

A new performance datalogger, known as Honda LogR, combines the Type R’s onboard computer and sensors with a smartphone app to help drivers monitor and record a variety of performance parameters. It also helps improve their driving skills through the use of a driving-smoothness algorithm. The system is exclusive to 2020 Type R GT and Sport Line models.

2. Suspension and steering upgrades for more responsive and sharper handling, and greater high-speed stability

  • Lightweight rigid bodyshell developed using innovative engineering techniques
  • Upgraded braking system with improved thermal efficiency
  • Advanced suspension setup delivers more responsive handling and enhanced ride comfort
  • Four-wheel Adaptive Damper System delivers improved road holding

The advanced platform that underpins the new Civic Type R models provides the foundation for the most sophisticated chassis dynamics setup in its class. Combined with a low centre of gravity and a lightweight, highly rigid bodyshell, this latest generation Civic Type R still delivers the most rewarding driving experience in the hot hatch segment.

The suspension of the 2020 Civic Type R has been upgraded for more responsive and sharper handling. The Adaptive Damper System’s control software now evaluates road conditions faster, resulting in improved damper reactions for both better handling response and ride quality. The rear bushings for the lower B-arms have been stiffened for an eight percent improvement in lateral loads, resulting in better toe-in characteristics when cornering. At the front, updated compliance bushings and new lower-friction ball joints result in sharper steering feel for better control.

Advanced dual-axis and multi-link suspension

In the front suspension, the 2020 Civic Type R uses a lower-arm-type front dual-axis strut configuration that provides high lateral rigidity for linear handling, and longitudinal rigidity appropriate for optimised ride compliance. Revised geometry incorporates a reduction in centre offset of 19mm and reduction of initial camber by 1.0 degree compared to the set-up in the standard Civic. This Type R-specific setup is designed to minimise torque steer and maximise handling ability.

Furthermore, in pursuit of increased rigidity and weight reduction, the lower arms and knuckles in the struts are now made out of high-rigidity aluminium.

A rear multi-link setup and unique suspension arms deliver increased geometrical stability. The result is assured performance at high-speed and enhanced ride comfort over its predecessor, as well as more linear handling in conjunction with the retuned electric power steering system.

The suspension improvements contribute to significantly improved stability under braking, reducing the total roll movement of the car. Combined with the lower centre of gravity and wider wheel track, this enables later braking and higher cornering speeds. Upper, lower and trailing arms are all high-rigidity parts unique to the Type R.

Adaptive Damper System

The Adaptive Damper System for the 2020 Civic Type R features upgraded control software. The Adaptive Damper System now evaluates road conditions ten times faster (2Hz to 20hz), resulting in improved damper reactions for both better handling response and ride quality.

Continuous independent control of the damping force in all four dampers is activated by adjusting the current sent to electromagnetic solenoid valves inside the damper, using feedback from a suite of three G-sensors around the car. These G-sensors – one on each side of the car at the base of the A-pillars, and one just forward of the rear axle – and stroke sensors on the suspension of each wheel, monitor the car’s status in real-time in concert with lateral G, steering angle and brake pressure sensors. The current to the electromagnetic coils inside the dampers is adjusted in milliseconds, altering the oil flow channels and thereby controlling the damping force.

The revised three-chamber dampers enable a significant improvement in the variability of damping force in both the tension and compression strokes, which has facilitated the addition of a ‘Comfort’ setting which offers more control over body motion, in the Civic Type R’s selectable driving modes.

A logic tuned specifically to the Type R’s unique suspension and tyres delivers independent control of each wheel, improving contact with the road surface (including on uneven surfaces) to maintain high levels of traction at all speeds. This ensures sharp handling and stability during cornering at higher speeds and limits body roll. The damping force is increased further in the revised +R mode [see section 5 below].

Dual pinion variable-ratio EPS

The Civic Type R’s dual pinion variable-ratio electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering has a similar setup as the standard Civic, but with an optimised variable ratio to deliver a more direct and secure driving experience.

The two pinions allow the steering and power assistance functions to be separated, while the variable-ratio system adjusts in accordance with the geometry between the rack and pinion, rather than by the speed of the car, which maintains a steady steering feel.

The steering feel of the electric power steering is calibrated individually to each of the three selectable driving modes: Comfort, Sport and +R. The latter delivers the most direct feel; a direct and linear balance is present in Sport; and a smooth and natural feel is available in Comfort.

Agile Handling Assist

Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) electronic stability system has been specially tuned for the Civic Type R, including bespoke operating parameters for the car’s track-focused +R mode. AHA operates through the Vehicle Stability Assist system, applying a light braking force to the inner wheels when the steering wheel is turned. It provides subtle, discreet assistance for increased responsiveness and stability at low and high speeds, and with both gentle and rapid steering inputs. AHA also improves the limited-slip differential effect by reducing the inner wheel slip during mid-corner acceleration.

High-performance braking system

For improved brake performance, the refreshed Civic Type R features an upgraded braking system, with two-piece floating front brake discs and new brake pads. The enhancements improve thermal efficiency, increasing the car's braking capabilities during high intensity driving.

Under heavy loads due to continuous circuit running, the brake stroke has been reduced by up to 15mm, this results in the brake pedal now deliving a more immediate feel compared to the outgoing model. In addition, the new front brake system reduces total unsprung weight by approximately 2.5kg to aid handling response.

At the front, four-piston calipers apply braking force to ventilated 350 mm discs. The front bumper’s intakes house unique cooling ducts that channel air through the body to reduce the heat of the discs and calipers. At the rear, solid 305mm discs are 9mm larger than those found on the 2015 Type R.

Lightweight, high-rigidity body frame

The advanced high rigidity body frame is a product of innovative engineering and construction technology, and this updated model maintains the torsional stiffness improvement of 37 percent and a static bending rigidity improvement of 45 percent that was introduced in the all new Civic Type R in 2017. This provides significant benefits to steering response and cornering stability, as well as aiding the passive safety and NVH characteristics of the car.

Type R also benefits from the tenth generation Civic hatchback’s innovative body assembly process, which involves a high-efficiency joining technique. The entire inner frame is assembled first, followed by the outer frame, and then the joints. This new ‘inside out’ process defies the conventional method of body frame assembly, but contributes greatly to the overall stiffness of the body.

3. Styling enhancements include new 'Sport Line' and extreme 'Limited Edition'

  • Expanded Civic Type R range offers different style and performance propositions
  • Exclusive new ‘Sunlight Yellow’ paint finish reflects extrovert nature of the extreme Type R Limited Edition
  • Sport Line offers stealthy aerodynamic styling with low-deck rear spoiler
  • Advanced best-in-class aerodynamics balance lift and drag
  • Superior airflow management uses innovative air slats and vortex generating elements

All models in the newly expanded 2020 Honda Civic Type R line-up, including the existing Type R GT, receive a number of styling enhancements. Lower fog light surrounds featuring a new symmetrical design, smooth surfaces and sleek styling blades on the front and rear bumper complete the cleaner styling direction that will feature across the new 2020 Civic range.

A new larger grille and thinner grille beam deliver a 13 percent larger air intake area. Combined with an updated radiator core, this decreases coolant temperature by up to 10 degrees (under Honda internal testing) in high-demand situations, such as on track. Testament to Type R engineers’ attention to detail is that a small reduction in front downforce resulting from the new larger grille opening was countered by a redesigned front under-bumper air dam, which was made slightly deeper and modified to include new ribbed sections on each end to create negative pressure on the front tyres.

The low and wide proportions underpin the distinctive design and classic hot hatch styling cues. At the front, the aggressive bumper is extended with a winged carbon fibre effect splitter and sporty red accent line, which runs around the entire car. Like all Type R models before it, each of the latest models is adorned with Honda’s famous red ‘H’ badge. The Type R features a lightweight aluminium bonnet with an integrated air duct, sited centrally in a trapezoidal recess. The bonnet weighs 5.3kg less than the steel bonnet on the standard five-door model.

Aerodynamic excellence

A short front overhang combines with almost entirely flat underside, under-engine and under-floor covers to aid airflow under the vehicle. Coupled with the rear diffuser that increases stability and optimises downforce, the overall aerodynamic profile helps to ‘suck’ the car onto the road to deliver a more rewarding driving experience.

At the rear, the large wing (low-deck spoiler on the Sport Line model) works in conjunction with vortex generator strakes on the roof line, diverting air flow across the tail and generating additional downforce on the rear axle. The wing contributes to overall negative lift, and improves road-holding abilities, particularly through high-speed corners.

Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition

Developed with track performance as its core focus, the new Civic Type R Limited Edition has been designed to be the most dynamic front-wheel drive hatchback in its class.

With only 100 models available in Europe, the new Limited Edition features lightweight 20-inch forged BBS alloy wheels with Michelin Cup 2 tyres, which are designed for high-speed track driving but still deliver exceptional on-road performance. These lightweight wheels and tyres offer a 10kg weight saving. The upgraded Adaptive Damper System optimises the performance of this new wheel and tyre combination, with the steering recalibrated to maximise input response and driver feedback in this new configuration.

To reflect the extrovert nature of the Civic Type R Limited Edition, an exclusive new colour, ‘Sunlight Yellow’, is introduced, paired with a dark chrome Civic badge on the rear. With the addition of contrasting gloss black paint on the roof, wing mirrors and intake vent on the bonnet, the bold colour scheme reflects Honda’s sporting heritage and ensures the extreme Limited Edition stands out as a unique proposition in the performance hatchback segment.

Honda Civic Type R Sport Line

The smart, understated Sport Line further expands the Civic Type R line-up for 2020. The new variant retains the sporting pedigree and outstanding driving dynamics of the Civic Type R, but introduces more discreet aerodynamic styling and a more refined ride, appealing to customers who seek a more discreet appearance for their high performance car.

The Sport Line’s most notable departure from the distinctive styling of the regular Civic Type R GT is a low-deck rear spoiler instead of the high-level wing. This gives the car a subtler silhouette while still delivering sporty styling. The Civic Type R Sport Line is also distinguished by a grey accent line which runs along the lower edge of the car.

New exclusive dark grey 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sports 4S tyres complete the understated yet sporty appearance. The tyre features softer sidewalls that enhance on-road comfort, with noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) further improved by additional soundproofing materials in the boot and tailgate.

Adding to the range of colour options, the 2020 Civic Type R GT and Type R Sport Line will be available in a bold new Racing Blue paint finish,.

4. 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine optimised for flexible, exhilarating performance

  • Civic Type R retains the 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine
  • Peak power of 320 PS; peak torque of 400 Nm
  • Manual transmission helps to retain the model’s position as the complete driver’s car
  • Bespoke triple-exit exhaust modulates the sonic tone of the engine
  • Active Sound Control (ASC) improved for 2020 Type R GT and Sport Line models

The 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO ‘heart’ of the multi-award-winning Type R has been optimised and refined to deliver outstanding power, torque and performance.

The Type R's throttle response and driveability still elevate it above competitors, thanks to optimised engine control settings, while the smooth and precise six-speed manual transmission is further enhanced by a rev match control system, ensuring no compromise in the Type R’s intimate, rewarding connection with the driver.

Peak power output from the direct-injection turbocharged engine is 320 PS at 6,500rpm, and peak torque is 400 Nm from 2,500rpm to 4,500rpm. It covers the 0-100km/h (0-62mph) sprint in just 5.8 seconds and will go on to a top speed of 272km/h (169mph).

Honda’s VTEC (Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control) and Dual-VTC (Dual-Variable Timing Control) technologies provide specific advantages to the engine’s mono-scroll turbocharger setup. VTEC varies the degree of exhaust valve lift to reduce turbo lag through increased exhaust pressure at lower rpm while delivering a high output at higher rpm. Dual-VTC allows a degree of overlap in valve opening, which is finely controlled across a broad rpm to improve responsiveness and fuel efficiency. The engine’s electric waste-gate enables a higher degree of freedom in boost control over a conventional turbo.

Advanced thermal management technology addresses the challenges presented by a high compression ratio of 9.8:1 and turbocharging. Charge air is cooled through a high-capacity air-to-air intercooler, while the cylinder head has a two-piece water-cooled manifold to lower exhaust gas and combustion chamber temperatures. Each piston also features a cooling channel to provide increased oil flow, which dramatically increases knock resistance.

Smooth and precise manual transmission

A smooth and precise six-speed manual transmission safeguards an intimate, rewarding connection with the driver.

A single-mass flywheel improves the engine response and reduces clutch inertia weight by 25 percent. Additionally, the gear ratios of the transmission have been optimised for performance, with a low final gear ratio to enhance response under acceleration. The Type R’s top speed is 272km/h (169mph).

The powertrain’s rev-matching function enables engine speed to be aligned with the main shaft speed during downshifts, avoiding undesirable transmission ‘shock’ associated with excessive or insufficient revving. The rev-matching function can be switched on or off in the user settings for the car, regardless of which driving mode is selected.

Final drive is transmitted through an exceptionally responsive helical limited-slip differential (LSD). The LSD aids strong cornering traction, even during hard driving. It can contribute to a reduced lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, when compared to the same powertrain with a traditional differential.

A water-cooled oil cooler specific to the gearbox helps to manage temperatures during prolonged at-the-limit driving (e.g. at a circuit). Furthermore, the transmission case is fin-shaped and aligned to wind-directing shapes in the under-engine cover to provide additional transmission cooling at high speeds.

Bespoke triple-exit exhaust now with Active Sound Control

Three fully-functional tailpipes are positioned in the centre of the rear diffuser. The exhaust delivers a refined exhaust note with an aggressive tone, with the addition of Active Sound Control (ASC) to enhance the driving experience even further.

ASC features individual settings for the Type R’s Sport, +R and Comfort driving modes. It works to enhance the engine sound during aggressive driving in Sport and +R modes and refines it in Comfort mode during acceleration.

Main tailpipes on either side deliver exhaust flow from the engine, while a unique, smaller centre tailpipe controls the sonic tone of the engine. To help generate a more aggressive tone while the engine is building speed, the centre tailpipe acts as another exhaust outflow, resulting in an increase in flow over the 2015 model at the same speeds.

However, at mid-load engine speed, the pressure in the centre tailpipe becomes negative, sucking in ambient air. This improves NVH characteristics by eliminating the exhaust booming sound that can otherwise permeate the passenger cabin.

Drive-by-wire throttle

A drive-by-wire throttle system with intelligent electronics link the accelerator pedal to a throttle valve inside the throttle body. The result is lower component weight, as well as quicker and more accurate throttle actuation. A specially programmed non-linear ratio between the throttle pedal and engine offers improved drivability and optimised engine response to suit specific driving conditions.

5. Engaging driving modes give Civic Type R unrivalled usability

  • Adaptive dampers unlock customisable driving mode settings
  • ‘Comfort’ mode affords exceptional compliance and everyday usability
  • Updated standard ‘Sport’ settings deliver a more direct driving experience
  • Focused +R mode remains the choice for track driving

A selection of driving modes gives the Civic Type R greater usability compared to the previous model. A ‘Comfort’ setting sits alongside agile ‘Sport’ and track-focused ‘+R’ modes. Each tailors the adaptive dampers, steering force, gear shift feel and throttle response of the car, on demand.

The Comfort mode affords greater compliance and everyday usability compared to the previous generation Type R, offering a softer suspension setup and smoother steering feel. Its presence is enabled by the revised three-chamber adaptive dampers, which offer greater variability of damping force in both tension and compression.

Comfort mode is not only ideal for rough road surfaces, but is also a more secure configuration when driving on choppy, undulating motorway surfaces at higher speeds. This mode can be selected by using a convenient rocker switch located behind the gear lever. The instrument cluster illuminations change when the mode is engaged, lessening the intensity and number of red accents around the virtual gauges.

Sport mode is the default setting when starting the vehicle. It offers a blend of comfort and dynamic response that corresponds approximately to a mid-point between the previous generation (2015 model year) Type R’s standard and +R modes.

The +R mode remains the choice for track driving. Compared to the previous Type R, engine responsiveness is heightened, with the torque-mapping more aggressive and performance-focused in its configuration, allowing more of the available torque at lower engine speeds. The throttle ‘blipping’ effect from the rev-matching function is also enhanced.

Damping force from the four-wheel Adaptive Damper System in +R mode produces a firmer, flatter ride and greater agility for high-performance handling. Furthermore, the variable-ratio EPS becomes heavier with reduced power assistance to deliver a more direct and linear steering feel.

The Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) system is retuned for +R mode to focus on acceleration and performance, allowing a greater yaw and slip rate before intervening. Additionally, both the Traction Control System and the VSA function can be turned fully off if the VSA button is pressed for five seconds while the Type R is in +R mode. The instrument gauge illumination switches to a more intense red theme when +R is selected from the rocker switch.

6. Sporty and sophisticated cabin with improved refinement and class-leading interior space

  • Modern, sleek and simple interior aesthetic with striking red accents
  • Addition of physical buttons enhances usability across the 2020 Type R range
  • Limited Edition features stripped out interior and red bucket seats that reflect sporting heritage

The 2020 Civic Type R GT builds on the sophisticated, premium ambience of the standard Civic’s cabin with striking suede-effect red and black fabric trim for the new high-backed sports seats. The bolstered seats and cushion pads offer superlative support for sports driving, and remain the lightest Type R specification seats ever.

The Alcantara®-wrapped steering wheel optimises grip, while the teardrop style gear knob echoes those on earlier Type R models. The gear knob features a 90g internal counterweight to help improve shift feel and accuracy. The dashboard panel’s carbon centre inlay is surrounded by red pinstripe trim – extending into the door cards – to provide a sporty signature unique to the Type R.

The sports-focused interior is designed to offer the most comfortable and sophisticated cabin in the compact class, and exudes a thoroughly modern, sleek and simple aesthetic to complement the sharply sculpted exterior. This is achieved with horizontal lines that accentuate the feeling of width and length, and therefore spaciousness.

Thanks to the longer, wider platform and longer wheelbase of the tenth-generation Civic, front seat and rear seat occupants benefit from greater visibility and more space in which to experience the Type R’s blistering performance. For the driver, a compact dashboard upper surface results in exceptional visibility. Thin A-pillars also reduce the obstructed forward view providing a class-leading 84.3 degrees of forward visibility.

Boot space is a generous 420 litres, and the compartment features an innovative side-sliding and removeable compact tonneau cover, ensuring the Type R retains its position as the most practical and versatile of high-performance hatchbacks. Loading heavy, wide and long items is made easy by rear seats that split 60:40, a low boot sill height (680mm) and wide boot opening (1,120mm) combined with the flat boot floor.

NVH performance in the cabin has improved for Sport Line models, with reduced interior sound pressure at higher engine rpm compared to previous Civic Type Rs.

‘Technology centre’ console

In response to customer feedback, Honda has revised the infotainment and climate controls by adding physical buttons and dials for optimum usability and functionality across the Civic range.

The centre console features a piano-black finish, and follows a ‘technology centre’ theme. The lower part in front of the gear lever is configured as a two-tier storage area, with a front tray that provides grab-and-go access to devices, with an integrated wireless smartphone charging pad. A second tray behind the centre console provides a more discreet storage area, as well as access to the HDMI and USB ports, and a 12-volt power socket. A cable pass-through enables a connection from the second tray to the first.

At the top of the centre console sits the seven-inch Honda CONNECT colour touchscreen which also displays images from the reversing camera. It also offers enhanced intuitive operation and full smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto.

In front of the driver, the instrument display layout provides vivid clarity and highly intuitive usability. A seven-inch colour TFT-LCD Driver Information Interface (DII) display makes up the largest central section of the instrument binnacle, which includes virtual gauges as well as a switchable section that can display a variety of different function readouts. Unique to the Type R is a driving mode-specific illumination function that features specialised readouts, including an LED gearshift indicator light, boost pressure gauge, G-Meter and lap time recorder.

Scroll and select functions for the DII are performed via thumbpad controls on the left spoke of the steering wheel. The combination of thumbpad controls and DII display in the driver’s forward line-of-sight helps to minimise distractions for the driver while underway. Also on the left spoke are the integrated Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® telephone controls, while a second thumbpad on the right spoke of the steering wheel operates the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist system settings.

Honda SENSING safety technology

Every Honda Civic – including the three Type R variants – features the Honda SENSING suite of safety technologies, one of the most comprehensive safety packages in its class. It uses a combination of radar and camera information, plus a host of high-tech sensors to warn and assist the driver in potentially dangerous scenarios.

The Honda SENSING suite of active safety technologies includes:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Road Departure Mitigation
  • Lane Keeping Assist System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Intelligent Speed Assistance
  • Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control

Also fitted as standard are Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control, which enhances control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The Type R GT and Sport Line models also benefit from Blind Spot Information including Cross Traffic Monitor, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, Honda CONNECT with Garmin Navigation, a wireless charging pad, and a 467-watt 11-speaker audio system.

Civic Type R Limited Edition interior

The Civic Type R Limited Edition’s interior echoes Honda’s sporting bloodline: the red bucket seats and red Alcantara steering wheel are complemented by a new teardrop style gear knob. Each model features a plaque marking the build number of the car.

Contributing to its track-focused character, the infotainment and air conditioning systems are omitted to save weight. Additional weight is saved by reducing sound-deadening materials in the roof, rear hatch panel, front fender and dashboard. Limited Edition has a 47kg weight reduction when compared to a Type R in GT specification. Unlike other brands’ extreme track-focused performance hatchbacks, the Limited Edition retains its rear seats and the everyday usability for which the Civic is renowned.

Civic Type R Sport Line interior

The interior of the new Civic Type R Sport Line retains a performance-focused appeal with a more subtle ambience. Black bucket seats with red stitching are complemented by the new teardrop style gear knob and Alcantara steering wheel. The red stitching is continued throughout the interior, including on the door panels, to reflect Honda’s sporting heritage.

As with the standard Civic Type R, the new Type R Sport Line is equipped with a range of comfort and safety features. The new variant retains the seven-inch infotainment system, which incorporates DAB radio, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto.

7. Honda LogR analyses driving performance data and supports development of driver skills

  • New software introduced to provide performance data for road and track driving
  • Data is accessed through the infotainment system or on a smartphone
  • Honda LogR can generate driver score based on advanced smoothness algorithim

Debuting for the first time in any Honda is a new performance datalogger, exclusive to the Civic Type R range. Known as Honda LogR, the new system combines the Type R’s onboard computer and sensors with a smartphone app to help drivers monitor and record a variety of performance parameters. It also helps improve their driving skills both on and off the track through the use of a driving smoothness algorithm to generate a driving score – unique to Honda LogR. With access to the Type R’s onboard computer, Honda LogR can deliver far greater detail than third-party performance logging apps and its ability to provide a driving score further differentiates it from other competitor offerings.

Honda LogR features three main functions: Performance Monitor; Log Mode; and Auto Score Mode. The Performance Monitor provides vehicle information to the driver on the Display Audio screen while the app is functioning. Log Mode records lap times on the track, allowing drivers to improve their driving skills on track. The Auto Score function encourages smooth day-to-day driving by monitoring braking, acceleration, steering and straight line driving, and generating a score based on the smoothness algorithm.

While driving, all interaction with Honda LogR is through the Display Audio screen. Log Mode and Auto Score both offer more in-depth analysis through the smartphone app, including previous drives, performance traces and replays using Google Maps, and detailed vehicle information.

Performance Monitor

When connected to the smartphone app, the Type R’s centre screen displays a Performance Monitor, which allows the driver to see vehicle functions in real time, including gear position, coolant and oil temperatures, oil and atmospheric pressures, and engine intake air temperatures.

Drivers can also choose between a ‘G-Meter’ view that indicates acceleration, braking, and cornering on a ‘bowl’ graph, or a ‘3D’ view that provides a bird’s-eye visual of the car’s cornering, braking, and acceleration behaviour. Additionally, the Display Audio screen shows the current drive mode (Comfort, Sport or +R).

Log Mode

Log Mode is designed to help drivers achieve the best possible lap times on the track. The programme uses GPS to monitor and map the vehicle’s location and the car’s internal sensors to gather data on acceleration, braking, cornering G, and other parameters. The app encourages smooth, controlled driving through the use of a colour-coded trace of each lap (green shows acceleration and red shows deceleration).

The goal is to encourage smooth inputs to the clutch, gear shift, steering, brakes and accelerator to keep the car balanced, and thus improve overall driving skills, not just the skills required for a particular track. The GPS locator can also be used to define and set start and finish markers for a timed lap on track and users can save lap times to compare their improvement over time.

Auto Score

The Auto Score function operates whenever the Honda LogR app is in use, monitoring the vehicle behaviour over time by tracking inputs for acceleration, deceleration, turning, and straight-line driving and generating a score for each. The driver's driving characteristics are scored by disassembling and evaluating the "quality" of driving into "comfort", "denseness", and "connection" and compared against the same expert driver baseline that is built into the app and used in the Log Mode function. However, the Auto Score encourages smoothness of inputs to help improve routine daily driving, rather than just seeking faster lap times. Similar to the Log Mode, Auto Score also keeps a historical record that ties in with the GPS function to show driving improvement over time.
