The new face of Stream for 2004

Continuing to defy convention with its unique combination of sparkling performance, people carrier-practicality and coupe-like styling, Honda’s Stream appears on the company’s stand with a host of changes for 2004.

Completely revised, more purposeful frontal styling, together with significant changes at the rear, deliver fresh appeal to the Stream’s rakish good looks, while the spacious, airy interior, offering accommodation across three rows of seats, benefits from a subtle makeover.

Mechanically Stream remains unchanged, with 156 PS 2.0 litre i-VTEC and (in certain markets) 125 PS 1.7 litre VTEC engines which, with a comparatively light kerb weight, deliver strong performance allied to good fuel economy. Entertaining handling is provided courtesy of the advanced toe control MacPherson front and reactive link double wishbone rear suspensions and the low centre of gravity, achieved thanks to the relatively low overall body height.

Bold new face

Stream’s new look front is dominated by headlamps which follow the theme recently introduced in other Honda models – namely a bold projector style three-light design contained in a housing with more flowing lines.

A deeper front bumper sports a completely open and uncluttered lower air intake flanked on either side by projector style foglamps, which are now standard across the range. The bumper’s upper edge is shaped to form an integral part of a bolder new front grille which replaces the previous model’s two slat design with a single and much larger horizontal bar and H mark.

In turn, the upper edge of the grille is finished in black, flowing seamlessly into the black surround of the light clusters and adding further distinction when viewed against light body colours.

Front wings and bonnet have been totally restyled. In particular, the completely smooth pressing of the bonnet panel, with its rounded front corners and dished outer edges flowing into the wings, imparts an integrated feel to the overall appearance of the Stream.

A new sill garnish and rear bumper give added definition to the side profile. Gone are the completely smooth lines of the bumper of the previous model and a rear splitter provides visual interest, while the fog and reversing lights are now relocated within the tailgate on either side of the reshaped licence plate recess.

Each of the three units within the taillight cluster now has a black, rather than red, surround which merges with the black outer edge of the tailgate glass for a more harmonious
appearance. This black trim also extends into the upper surface of the rear roof spoiler.

Either new design 5-spoke alloy wheels or steel wheels with a new cover design depending on grade complete the exterior changes.

Inner subtlety

The cabin continues to offer three rows of seats, with access to the third row gained by folding down the second row seat back on either side and sliding the seat base forward. The third row seats can be fully stowed for a flat load floor, simply by sliding them back, flipping the seat base through 180 degrees and then folding the backrests in its place. Folding the second row seatbacks provides extra loading length.

For 2004 models, the second row seats have been changed from a single bench type seat base with accommodation for three adults to two captain’s chair style seats separated by a central console. Previously the central portion of the seat back folded down to form an armrest, at the same time revealing two cupholders in its back. There is still a central armrest, but the cupholders are now contained in the central console.

Further subtle enhancements to the interior include reshaped seats for greater support and comfort, a new black seat fabric and new red illuminated main dials and pointers for ES
models.

The new Stream, in LS and ES grades, entered showrooms in January.
