  • Continuation of the 50 year celebration of the seminal CB750, with the nitrous-powered Starrider taking centre stage

Honda were in full attendance at the 14th Annual ‘Glemseck 101’ festival held in Leonberg, Germany this weekend, continuing the celebration of five decades of Honda’s inline-four heritage, complete with a unique Sprint International qualifying race between IDM rider Alex Polita and Isle of Man TT racer Connor Cummins.

50 years after the CB750 - the original superbike - went on sale, Honda also continued to celebrate its inline four CB heritage with three German dealer customisations of its Neo Sport Café flagship, the CB1000R. With live voting on Honda’s social media channels and at the show, Kummich Honda were declared the winner with ‘Monoposto’ - their elegant re-working of the CB1000R, featuring a deep black and blue paint scheme, the classic yellow Honda wing logo, cut-down front mudguard and a bespoke high exit ‘scrambler’ exhaust.

The real centrepiece of Glemseck 101 is its series of 1/8th mile sprints on tarmac which once formed part of the 11km-long Solitude race track, home to both Formula One races and World Motorcycle GPs until the mid 1960s. Sixteen racers battle it out for top honours in a one-to-one knock-out format across six different categories.

Multiple world champions Freddie Spencer and Mick Doohan have represented Honda in the Sprint International category in 2017 and 2018 respectively. For 2019, in a unique ‘qualifying run’ on Saturday, Alex Polita, HRP Motorsport IDM Rider, raced ‘Mano a Mano’ on ‘Yokozuna’ - his own custom CB1000R - against multiple Isle of Man TT podium winner Connor Cummins, riding the CB1000R-adical designed and built by Gannet Design and Honda dealer Fuhrer Moto.

Famed for his fast race starts in IDM, Alex Polita won through to the Sprint International on Sunday, where he claimed a creditable third place overall in the 16-strong field, eclipsing the achievements of his illustrious predecessors of 2017 and 2018.

Further details of all seven of Honda’s customisations on show at Europe’s biggest motorcycle festival follow:

‘The Yokozuna’

Glemseck 101 2019

Built in his own custom garage in Italy, Alex Polita’s ‘Yokozuna’ was specifically designed to race at this year’s Glemseck 101. Sporting a reinforced single-sided swing arm extended by 5cm, Yokozuna is clothed in hand-beaten aluminium including the large ‘Yokozuna’-branded disc over the CB1000R rear wheel - all designed to accentuate the stock bike’s brushed aluminium design features. For best balance on the sprint course, Polita’s machine ran with enlarged (by three teeth) rear and smaller (by one tooth) front sprockets.

Yokozuna (named after the top ranking in Japanese Sumo wrestling) is suspended on front forks and a shock modified by Honda Germany’s Holzhauer Racing Promotion IDM team. The 107kW engine was left untouched, but the power is translated to the track via an HRP racing clutch and slick tyres, with exhaust gases dispersed using a hand-built one-into-three open exhaust mounted on a Light Tech platform.

‘The CB1000R-adical’

CB1000R-adical at Glemseck 101 2019

The CB1000R-adical, designed by Ulfert Jansson of Gannet Design and built by former 2005 125cc World Championship winning mechanic and Honda dealer Stefan Fuhrer of Fuhrer Moto, was piloted by multiple Isle of Man TT podium winner and Glemseck 101 regular Connor Cummins.

Built in early 2019, the CB1000R-adical won the Swiss Honda dealer custom CB1000R Neo Sports Café custom contest and is awash with smart design choices, cutting-edge technology, capped off with a bespoke seven-layer camouflage paint-scheme by Walter Oberli.

Looking to keep weight to a minimum, the CB1000-Radical sits upon unique Rotobox carbon fibre wheels, complete with CeraCarbon Racing front forks and custom carbon fibre sprockets. The aggressive look and feel of the CB1000R-adical is completed with a headlight that has been lowered and moved forward by 60mm and a reclaimed CBR600RR belly pan.

Like ‘Yokozuna’, the engine remains untouched with exhaust gases now funnelled through a lightweight titanium and carbon fibre Akrapovic silencer.

CB1000R Limited Edition

This limited edition CB1000R was produced by Honda at its factory in Atessa, Italy, in a limited run of 350 bikes. Available in France, Spain, Germany and Italy the Limited Edition features an HRC-inspired tricolour paint scheme complemented by carbon fibre parts and a split-level exhaust from SC Project.

Monoposto – Kummich Honda

Featuring a deep black and blue custom paint scheme, complete with a classic retro yellow Honda Wing logo, Kummich Honda completed their bike with Motogadget indicators, black LSL handlebars, Rizoma fluid reservoirs, braided hoses, a cut-down front mudguard, scrambler exhaust complete with extended exhaust wrapping and engraved side panels with the names ‘Monoposto’ and ‘Kummich’ taking centre stage.

CB1000R by Buselmeier

Celebrating 60 years of Honda’s involvement in Grand Prix racing, Buselmeier adorned their custom CB1000R with a SC Project Exhaust, R&G tail tidy, Fechter sprocket covers, Kellermann Rhombus Dark LED indicators, Probike lever guards and braided steel brake lines. A higher handlebar played host to Ferrara II mirrors and the bike was finished off with a unique Grand Prix-inspired paint scheme.

CB1000R by Fischer & Bohm

Fischer & Bohm’s custom CB1000R was dominated by its bright red powder nitride frame and silver bodywork. Like the Buselmeier bike, the Rhombus Dark LED indicators came courtesy of Kellerman, with the handlebars, levers and brake lines supplied by Spiegler. Rizoma reservoirs and bar ends finished the look of the front of the bike, with an Akrapoviċ exhaust and a tailtidy completing the upgrades.

The CB750 ‘Starrider’

Living up to Motoism’s mantra ‘Made in the Shade’ the Starrider sports a custom carbon tank and rear wheel covers, full LED lighting and a unique WIG-welded rear subframe. The stealth matt black custom is finished off with modern controls and minimal digital clocks - housing the classic Honda CB750 powerplant in an ultra-modern design.
