Honda to present portfolio of intelligent mobility technologies at ITS World Congress in Copenhagen
  • Current and next-generation Honda advanced technologies on show at global conference
  • Presentation of results from HyFIVE fuel cell car and infrastructure deployment project in Denmark and UK
  • V2X-enabled Africa Twin previews smarter safety system for motorcycles
  • Honda announces participation in autonomous driving pilot scheme

At the 25th annual ITS World Congress in Copenhagen (17-21 September), Honda will showcase its portfolio of intelligent transportation systems. Under the conference theme of ‘Quality of Life’, Honda will present current- and next-generation products that focus on smart vehicle monitoring, connected car communication, active safety, and autonomous driving. Its presence will comprise five key exhibits.

Clarity Fuel Cell will be on display to highlight Honda’s continued efforts to drive increased adoption of fuel cell vehicles and create a viable hydrogen refuelling infrastructure across the continent. In Europe, the Clarity Fuel Cell was introduced in limited numbers in Denmark and UK through the HyFIVE demonstration project, which helped to deploy refuelling stations across the region and showcase the technology to a wider audience.

Alongside the Clarity will be an Africa Twin that is equipped with a new V2X (vehicle-to-everything) system suitable for a motorcycle. This technology is the latest phase in ongoing Honda research that seeks to dramatically improve the level of communication between motorcycles and other vehicles, and thereby reduce the number of collisions on the road and ease traffic flow.

Honda is striving to realise an ‘accident-free’ and ‘sustainable’ society expressed by two concepts across its global business: ‘Safety for Everyone’ and ‘Blue Skies for Our Children’. Accordingly, at ITS World Congress in Copenhagen, it will also be presenting its industry-leading active safety and driver assist technologies – Honda Sensing™. This safety suite uses a combination of radar and camera information to warn and assist the driver in potentially dangerous scenarios. The systems include: automatic emergency braking to avoid potential collisions; adaptive cruise control that can adapt to other vehicles ‘cutting in’ on motorways; and lane keeping assist system that can automatically make subtle adjustments to keep the car in the middle of the current lane.

Honda will also introduce its participation in a European autonomous driving pilot scheme. This follows Honda’s presentation at the 2017 ITS World Congress, where it highlighted the significant potential of V2X technologies to create ‘safe swarm’ systems – replicating the coordinated and efficient movements of a school of fish – that seamlessly communicate between vehicles to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety.

Ever since the debut of its Cooperative Autonomous Driving technologies in 2013, Honda has been exploring how these systems could help motorcycles, automobiles and pedestrians work cooperatively through communication and sensing technologies, providing safer and more convenient services without compromising the fun and excitement of mobility.

The World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems is an annual conference and trade show to promote ITS technologies. It provides an ideal opportunity for all stakeholders involved with intelligent transportation to discuss projects and make the necessary contacts to move initiatives forward. The Congress also acts as a showcase for latest ITS achievements from the host city and region, and the results of the HyFIVE fuel cell demonstration project in Denmark are therefore set to be a key talking point for the 2018 event.
