Honda Dealer Know How Guide – How to pitch your story to the media

It never hurts to pick up the phone and pitch a potential story to a local journalist. The worst thing that could happen is they say no, but, remember, you are a sales man – and your skills are transferable!

Make sure it is a story you should be selling

If you have an event coming up, a special offer, a new model in the showroom, or an order book opening for an exciting new model coming up, great. Pick up the phone and see if you can persuade a journalist from your local paper, village lifestyle magazine or blog to pay the showroom a visit. If you are not sure, then give us a call on 07495 578705 and we can help you decide.

Media drives

As much as it might seem like a great idea to offer a visiting journalist a drive in your latest demonstrator, please don’t. Direct them to the Honda press fleet manager where they can be properly vetted first. The press fleet will have all the correct insurance in place as well as a fleet of vehicles that are specifically for this purpose. If you know of a local journalist who would like to drive a Honda vehicle, please pass their contact details along to the press office. Contact details for the press office can be found on the Honda News website.

Who, What, Where, When, Why and How?

Remember the key information needed when pitching a story. Make a note of the following points before picking up the phone for maximum chance of success.

  • Who – Who is the story about, who are you trying to reach?
  • What – What is happening?
  • Where – Where is the event or promotional activity happening?
  • When – When is it happening?
  • Why? – What is the reason for the story i.e. growth, new models, etc.?
  • How? – How did the story come about?
