All-New ASIMO Takes A Stroll Around New York

All-New ASIMO Takes A Stroll Around New York

Ever wonder what ASIMO, the world’s most advanced humanoid robot, would do with a day off in one of the world’s biggest cities?

Well, in a new video released today, All-New ASIMO, the latest generation of Honda’s humanoid robot, goes on a tour of New York City.

Earlier this year, All-New ASIMO made its European debut in Brussels, Belgium. It has since begun a Europe-wide tour, including stops in the United Kingdom, where it attended the WIRED 2014 conference and visited the editorial offices of the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Most recently the robot made its country debut in the Czech Republic, where it was invited to celebrate the first anniversary of the country’s refurbished Techmania Science Centre.

But as documented in the unique new video, before all of that, All-New ASIMO spent some time getting to know New York, popularly known as the “Big Apple”.

An early-morning visit to Times Square starts the day as ASIMO greets the day’s early risers at one of the world’s most famous crossroads. At lunch, ASIMO spends time at the scenic Brooklyn Bridge Park. ASIMO makes some new friends at the plaza overlooking the city’s East River and poses for paparazzi with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge in the background before travelling back to Manhattan.

ASIMO then joins a surprised crowd in Madison Square Park in the shadow of the historic Flatiron Building. Taking advantage of the great Empire State weather, ASIMO dances for the crowd and introduces itself to hundreds of youngsters.

The video can be viewed in its entirety via this YouTube link as well as on Honda and ASIMO social media platforms.

About ASIMO

ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative MObility) is the world's most advanced humanoid robot. Honda engineers began developing a humanoid robot in 1986 for the purpose of someday helping people in need. After years of research and development, they created an advanced humanoid robot able to function in real-world environments. ASIMO made its European debut at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany on 30 June 2003, where it appeared at a symposium entitled ‘From High Tech to Intelligence – The Challenge of Humanoid Robots’.

Since its introduction in Europe, ASIMO has been demonstrated regularly at Honda-related events. Honda has also partnered with many education projects around the region, aimed at using ASIMO to motivate schoolchildren and students to learn science & engineering.

About Honda Robotics

Honda Robotics is a collective term for technologies and products created through Honda’s research and development of humanoid robots.

Honda’s walking assist device with stride management system which supports walking for people with weakened leg muscles, the bodyweight support assist system which reduces the load on legs by supporting part of the bodyweight, and the UNI-CUB β, a compact mobility device that provides free movement in all directions, are examples of product applications resulting from the application of bipedal technology and balance control technology amassed through the research and development of ASIMO.

In 2013 a remotely controlled survey robot jointly developed by Honda began conducting on-site surveys on the first floor of a nuclear reactor building at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan.
